Another DVX100 Firewire Port Burnt, now what??

I saw a few threads dealing with this but I still have a couple of questions..

1. I knew about hot-swapping and I've always had my camera off, connect to the computer then to the camera and then turn the camera on. Everytime I did that the computer was on. The problem is when I connect my camera with my computer off, then my computer won't recognize my RME Fireface 800 I use for audio. Anyways, so that's that. I'm going to have to turn both devices off in the future.

Some say it may cost $100 to fix, someone else said $800 (that's ridiculous!), another said Panasonic charged $1300 (no comments except I can buy a used DVX on Craigslist for close to that). Others recommend getting a low end camera for capturing purposes. I need to know what some of you recommend is the best option to go about this problem. I have four tapes due next week and they charge me like $25 to capture each tape at this one place.

So far I'm leaning towards getting a used Canon ZR500 camera to capture my footage. Would it be a problem capturing with a lower end camera if I film in 24p??

BTW, I've tried three different cables, different ports on my PC, made sure the menu dv out option is turned on and so I'm isolating the problem to the firewire port on my DVX100 being burnt out.

No, shouldn't be any issue in using a cheap handycam, its just reading the ones and zeros, so you are good if that is the route you take

sweet, thanks guys, per your advice I just got me a Canon ZR500 for $70 bucks on eBay

I'm so glad I can capture all my 24p footage since ALL my footage is 24p
