BlackMagic Cinema Camera Technology Announcements & Latest Info'

Right, S35 and APS-C are roughly the same (though it should be pointed out S35 wasn't universal, quite a few films actually shot on 70MM, especially if they had grand landscapes or huge crowd scenes). So agreed, APS-C is doable with still lenses. You're still going to have to have something pretty wide for a normal, but it's not too bad. When you get to the 1.9 of 4/3s it starts to get dicey. You basically need a 24mm just to have a normal lens and for a wide you're getting way down into 14mm territory (where options become very limited). This S16 sensor is something like 2.3 crop, so you're getting into territory where lens options become very very limited.

Yes but whether it's cinema or consumer glass it shouldn't make a difference when it comes to field of view. A 50mm Prime's field of view should be roughly the same on S35 Film or an ASP-C size (1.6 crop) sensor. At least that's my understand, but correct me if I'm wrong.

That is wrong. The field of view changes considerably going from ff to 1.6x crop. What doesn't change is the mm. A 50mm on a 1/3" sensor is very, very telephoto.

Oh.... My.... Good.... God.... and I mean that literally. He has shown his face upon the world and delivered unto it this camera. Ok, maybe I'm over reacting, but I'm literally that excited about this camera right now. Bring in the pundits to temper my enthusiasm or I might throw my money at them right now!

-Sensor is smaller than the GH2 but a little bigger than 16mm.
-The highest frame rate is 30P. Absolutely no slow mo even at 60P 720.
-No audio meters. Though 1/4 inch TRS jacks are pretty cool. You'll probably need a portable little mixer to feed it mic signals.

As I understand it, it comes with about $1,500 in software. So, really this cam is only $1,500. Whoops, sorry, just got you excited again :-) . It is pretty cool to see Black Magic bend Canon over and give it to them hard and fast though. I hope it's finally clear that good cinema tools are feasable for under the $5K mark. I get tired of the "what do expect for under $5K?" remarks. This, I expect this! or better. The bar has been set, and if canon and the rest don't meet at least these specs, THEY WILL LOSE.

The funny thing is, I'm sure spies were going back and forth between the big boys: Canon, Panasonic, Sony, and RED and deciding what the other was doing and if they were doing enough to counter with their own products. I wonder if they had any idea that this was coming from Black Magic or if their all like... "Oh... crap..."

I'd bet the poor folks at Digital Bolex didnt see this coming. "Oh...crap..." would be an understatement given BM essentially destroyed most of their business model with a product ready to ship a month or so from now. I mean I know their offering is different to BM's camera and for the sake of 'the little guy' I hope the two can co-exist... but in reality I just cant see them surviving this. Shame :-(

Audio hasn't even been implemented yet. Not sure where the no audio meters has come from. That's different to what I've heard.

@John Brawley - do you like the color ?

The colour is very much a work in progress as well. They are still getting to know the sensor. They have a lot of smart guys at BMD...remember they also own the best colour correction tool on the planet, DaVinci...

Could this be the "new dvx"?

Meaning, the camera that most shoestring indies want and can actually afford? Yes, the low cost digital filmmaking camera world is hugely diverse now (some would say ridiculously fragmented), but this makes sense to everyone who yearns for a no-compromise core image at an astoundingly low price. It's just about everything RED promised with the original Scarlet cinema, but essentially gave up on.

Amazing how far out of left field this one came from.

cheers John. Also how big were the cinema DNG files? Did you keep any small ones?

I can provide you server space and an ftp upload link if you have a file that is small enough and you don't mind sharing

One look at the digital bolex told me it ought to be a plastic pretend 4K. I doubt it will come to fruition.

Briiiing! bells just went off in my ears! I was not aware that DaVinci was a product of BMD. So a little one eyed man is whispering in my ear right now...what's that you say? "It's the old 'Kodak Marketing Model' You sell the camera for cheap so you can sell film made by Kodak" That's why the brilliant mathematicians on the forum have figured out that you can sell $2.00 software for $1,500 if you MARKET the perception that customers are actually getting the software for Free, when in fact they are paying too much by twice (200%) for the bundle. Doh! That's why I went to Business School.
You guys that are paying $3,000 have just been suckered. The street value is actually $1,500. Sorry to do that to ya :(
But that's OK cause look at how much CHEAPER it is than Scarlet, and the C300 and the FS700 yada yada
