Open File Formats
Blackmagic Cinema Camera uses standard file formats, so you don’t need to wait years for your video software to support the media! Recording native 2.5K resolution uses the open CinemaDNG format, so you get full 12-bit RAW recording quality using the built-in SSD recorder, and the benefit of industry wide compatibility. For even greater compatibility you can also choose 1080HD recording into ProRes and DNxHD compressed video formats. Blackmagic Cinema Camera is the only camera to support purely open file formats!

Enter Metadata Easily
The large capacitive touchscreen display makes it incredibly easy to log metadata directly into the camera. When you tap the display with a finger, a data entry window called the "slate" appears. This lets you enter shot information just like typing on a smartphone. This data is then stored in the files so can be accessed by NLE software when editing content later. Metadata is compatible with popular software such as Final Cut Pro X and DaVinci Resolve.

Fast Metadata Entry
Logging file metadata directly into the camera dramatically speeds up the post production process. With the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 'slate' you can enter information such as shot number, search tags, scene number, timecode and more! You can even set shot number and other data to increment automatically! Metadata is compatible with leading editing software and is fully searchable so when you're editing your project you can avoid the time consuming task of searching for specific shots!

I am EXCITED beyond words about this! OMG! This simple seems too good to be true for the price range! If this is true I can't see any other camera ending up in my hands this year but this one! Thank you Black Magic for LISTENING and giving a damn about filmmakers! :D

It is awesome, and BlackMagic thanks you for being excited about it too. This camera was a blindsided announcement- Literally almost no one knew this was coming. It is definitely going to change the price & performance for this segment of the market

Thank you Blackmagic for ending the madness. I knew Sony Panasonic and to a lessor extent Canon couldn't do this for fear of hurting their other lines. Looking at it now it's obvious that a company like Blackmagic who already have the codec end of things sorted would combine a large sensor to a recording device and change the game. I have already spoken to a distributor and placed my name on a list. This is fantastic.

For everyone complaining about the sensor only being s16, it's actually a good bit bigger than standard s16. It's pretty close to m4/3rds, so all you guys shooting on gh1's and gh2's should be familiar with how easy it is to get some nice DOF with decently fast lenses

Awesome that you got yourself on the list Ryaninoz. Contgratualtions..... BlackMagic thanks you for believing in their product enough to get in line to get it. The BlackMagic camera is a revolution all on it's own. No other camera like this has ever existed at this price/performance it's coming in at- $2,999.

These are amazing times......

I'm willing to trade a bit of DOF for 4-5 stops of dynamic range, especially at this price. I would love to see a head to head with an Alexa. $60k vs $3k. This is very exciting news!

I think the BlackMagic camera is going to do quite well in that test. This literally sets a whole new game in motion. What's also awesome, this camera is not some prototype of something to come maybe next year, however it was developed, and then announced. Red showed us what a driven independent thinking Man ( Jim Jannard ) and Company can do. BlackMagic is doing this to, and this is great. Two awesome companies, delivering awesome products. Exciting times!

The S16 sensor is excellent. The M4/3rds sensor has always been good. Different tools for different needs. Doesn't make one tool better than the other.

I have a request: Could someone make a cool sensor chart showing 2/3 to S16 to APSC to Super 35mm and then Full frame. I want to add this to the front page/first thread so people can see the crop factors. If anyone could do this, it would be very appreciated.

Guys shooting GH1/2 will also know that's it's gonna be hardly possible to do any wide shots with this Blackmagic camera. Equipped with only Canon/Nikon mounts, there is simply no glass. Why won't they add PL or at least m4/3 mounting options? That would make plenty of wide lenses readily available and one could always put EF/Nikon glass using the adapter. Having said that, it's not really that much of a problem for me - I don't get too wide, Tokina 11-16 will do the job for me, but there are many people whose shooting style is more towards wide end.

As long as it's got the EF mount, there will be lens mount adapters to get other mounts. Your wide limitations will not be any different than you got with s/16. As for the m4/3rd, seeing how the BlackMagic is getting press in its first day of announcement. The 3rd party guys might serve up a solution since since there will be money to be made.

You're right some lens formats can be adapted to EF (PL f.ex.), but I doubt s16 lenses will cover the sensor. This narrows the lens choice drastically. The m4/3 lenses would perfectly fit here, if there was a way to use them and there is none.

Sure third party guys might (and probably will) come up with some kind of workaround (lens mount replacement). I was referring to what (and why) Blackmagic equipped their camera with. It would just make much more sense to put m4/3 mount, which allows for mounting almost every lens (the only problem being Canon EF and its electronic aperture) including native m4/3 glass, which seems to be very useful in the context of sensor dimensions. Also, replacing the lens mount can result in warranty issues - we've seen this before.
