Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

Forgive me if I'm wrong on this, but the Samyang/Rokinon lenses retain the aperture rings even on the EF mount versions, correct. Seems to me these lenses are a no brainer for cine style shooting on a budget. The whole set is half the price of one Compact prime. I would for sure get the 14, 35, 85. I have a 24 2.8 nikkor, so the only reason to switch is speed, I'll save that cash for now. There are lots of good 50's out there, I have nikon and pentax to chose from to see which I like better, but I don't know why they don't just make one for the sake of a set. They are also full frame glass, so not limited to only crop frame cameras.

Here's why I out and out disagree with you:

EVERY camera looks good with thousands of dollars put behind it. Every single one. I don't want test footage from a multi million dollar set, I don't need it.

I want to see skin, lowlight, blown out highlights, the absolute WORSE conditions before I make a purchase. If this represents the worst of it, then it only gets better when there's time and money.

So, yeah, I completely disagree with you, and I'm very glad that it was John Brawley that they chose, someone who's worked with the best equipment out there on serious productions and proves that he knows his way around cinema. Just look at his blog.

I'll take him as my primary backyard footage camera tester over most ANY day.

I agree with Kholi on this one COMPLETELY.

Strange that Red talk for years and years about building a camera like this but in the end they totally failed.

Much props to black magic.

I kinda said that about RED 5 years ago. The advantage of this BMC is that the developers had the past 5 years of trials and customer feedback AND higher res touch screens, in other words, technology CONVERGENCE to leapfrog from. RED was and is still a trail blazer. I suspect RED got bogged down in too many directions when they should really have been laser focused on getting Scarlet out. This really makes RED Digital look bad as a consumer electronics company! Oh gosh... Maybe they don't care about the lower-middle spectrum after all.
I do wonder what's supposed to happen if there's a malfunction in the touch screen? Back-up unit ???

After all I have read, I think BM going with the EF mount still makes the most sense. I still see more people with Canon DSLRs than any m4/3 camera doing video work, so it makes sense that these people would benefit most and find it a no-brainer to go to this camera if they are looking for something down this path. Heck, as a B camera to an FS700 I am even thinking. The price is just right and for the majority of B-camera work, my 11-16 is going work great.

Yea the way I see it, besides needing maybe a new additional wide lens, most Canon DSLR folks won't need to change too much. I think that's just fine...

I think this would be better than the FS700 unless you get the 4K upgrade which will cost a arm and a leg.

All it really is missing is the high speed frame rates for slow mo.

With the Fs700 compressed 1080P and BMCC 2.5K Raw which one would be the B camera?

As far as footage goes, I'm with Kholi....I don't want to see a Full on Hollywood production. What JB did was perfect on the clips I've seen....lingering enough to show viewers what was there and composed well...that should be enough. No need for slick camera moves, etc etc ...too distracting to really dive in to the footage itself.

You know BM had a lot of time to wait for convergent tech to be there to build this camera. But that does not excuse Red from failing to create the "affordable" Red Scarelet. The BMCC is being announced just few months later than the Scarlet X.

the footage of that girl putting on the make-up is fantastic. it does not look like video. it looks less like video than RED footage. that extra dynamic range must really be the key. with the footage looking as good as this does, it might be alright to let more of the frame stay in focus. that was what i always liked about the backgrounds in DSLR footage going so blurry-- it hid the blown out highlights.

this is just great. kudos to Black Magic.
"B.M." shall soon be synonymous with "Black Magic" and no longer "Bowel Movement".

It's all a matter of need. First, with my AF100 and my FS100, I got/get a lot of work doing slo-mo for many different needs. In fact, for our own productions, I shoot almost as much 60p as I do 24p as we do a lot of action material. This is a big need of mine and has been FANTASTIC on the FS100. I have a script I've been sitting on because I've wanted better slo-mo that has a scene I CANNOT WAIT to shoot on the FS700. The resolution on the BM isn't what is interesting me, just as the 4K of the FS700 isn't as important as what I list below. I am perfectly happy with the resolution of the FS100.

Second, rolling shutter is still a question. On the FS100, it's decently fast that we can go handheld without a stabilizer if need be. The FS700 is at least as fast from the tests so far.

Third, I use my 11-16 at 11mm all the time for special types of shots that we do. I don't want to give up that width as I LOVE Sony's sensor size.

Forth, I am VERY happy with Sony's battery life on the FS100, it's truly amazing. I don't want anything else hanging off the camera when I go hand held, so an extra battery while having the dead internal battery just their adding weight is a negative for me.

Fifth, Built in ND filters. I had them with the AF100 and I miss them SO dearly. I have used variableND. I've used dedicated ND. I'd rather never have to use them again.

This is why I see the BM for me as a good B camera. It can use all my lenses natively. It can give me wide DR when I need it in situations where the FS700 isn't needed. And most importantly, it would be great for greenscreen work. The biggest question for me will be rolling shutter in how well it can be utilized in our shooting styles. I think it complements other cameras and that is pretty cool.

I would love for this to have the ability to record in prores LT or other prores flavors. there may be times id shoot something that doesnt require that much quality but i just want longer recording times.

There's so much goodness in this camera's image - 12bit, the latitude, high data rate. It really does feel like being a kid in a candy store.

I'd only balance by saying that the model had a 1.2 HMI on her (diffused)...that's a whole lotta light to balance the window.

Just wanted to clear this up before any info gets twisted: the extra battery charges the internal battery. You will never have a dead battery if you have another battery or two. That means you can hop off of the rig, do whatever you want, return to the battery powered rig.

It's like the Bebob RED battery plate: endless power as long as you keep the batteries going.

Definitely not dead weight. But, I get what you were saying. Didn't want people to think the battery was useless.

Except you can easily get a m43 to EF mount adapter not so easy going the other way.

The problem is a huge selection of EF lenses require electronic control to change the IRIS and the selection of adapters adds considerable cost, weight, power requirements, etc. And it's pretty clear, waiting for another company to make an adapter for your camera is a pipe dream half the time. I owned, used and then sold my AF100 and the Birger adapter is STILL not out for it. Two years later is it?

Not sure if this has been covered but does it have PEEKING? I'm sure it does but it would be a shame if it didn't...

Thanks for the clarification, didn't know that. That is a cool design decision to work as such.
