Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

Thanks for the clarification, didn't know that. That is a cool design decision to work as such.

Trust me, I immediately posted to Luis and Stephen on facebook to ask them why they did that when I heard about it.

But, after calming down and thinking about it, it's actually pretty solid. The internal battery lasts two hours (John said his battery lasted two hours), and you could always just plug in a cheap drill battery or similar to charge it while you're walkin' around. Never have to turn the camera off, never have to take it off of a rig to switch it out.

The problem is a huge selection of EF lenses require electronic control to change the IRIS and the selection of adapters adds considerable cost, weight, power requirements, etc. And it's pretty clear, waiting for another company to make an adapter for your camera is a pipe dream half the time. I owned, used and then sold my AF100 and the Birger adapter is STILL not out for it. Two years later is it?

I for one hate any lens that has no aperture ring or has focus by wire. Don't see why so many "pros" need autoiris and autofocus. I say keep your plastic canon lenses and let us use some nice vintage glass and newer stuff from Lecia, Zeiss and Voigtlander.

Not sure if this has been covered but does it have PEEKING? I'm sure it does but it would be a shame if it didn't...

Yes it has focus peaking. Here: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/blackmagiccinemacamera/techspecs/

The other basic requirement is some kind of exposure indicator. Right now the spec sheet says the iris button adjusts iris automatically - but that would be with an EF lens only. John Brawley's review says it has zebras. I hope they add a histogram.

Just wanted to clear this up before any info gets twisted: the extra battery charges the internal battery. You will never have a dead battery if you have another battery or two. That means you can hop off of the rig, do whatever you want, return to the battery powered rig.

It's like the Bebob RED battery plate: endless power as long as you keep the batteries going.

Definitely not dead weight. But, I get what you were saying. Didn't want people to think the battery was useless.

You saying that makes me wonder two things:

1 - Will the battery be high enough quality to handle the potential abuse that kind of charging/discharging? My (limited) understanding of battery tech tells me it's better to let your batteries discharge fully before recharging them.

2 - What is BMDs plan for replacing the battery if/when it stops holding a charge or otherwise fails?

What? Rolling Shutter?...

It's a compressed vimeo file, man. Of course there's going to be banding. Rolling shutter has nothing to do with any of that.

It's also a locked off shot and she bears no resemblance to a fan...

So, rolling shutter has nothing to do with it.

Probably a grading or vimeo artifact. It's also a prototype camera.

StephenM has experience with the Hyperdeck, he seems to really like it and has no trouble. I think they designed it with the continuous charging/discharging in mind.

I don't even think batteries have memory anymore, thought that was done away with like over six years ago? Not sure, though.

Good question. RED batteries only last a certain amount of time, they don't replace them, you just buy a new one. But, this is yet another good question to ask those guys. I'd like to know as well.

I once read someone refer to rolling shutter as the camera shaking from being too light, jittering.

I've resigned myself to something in the grade, as well.

Yes the 35mm adapter would have a double use in daylight as it will act like a ND filter with the light loss with a base 800 iso camera ;-)

Thats not such a crazy idea... I have a full set of Super Baltars sitting right here...

How much of a light loss do you incur with the s35 adapter? One stop?

Thx

I think you need to go back and look at the price of this camera a few times and consider the segment this camera is filling. I mean, I won't argue that I wish my lenses didn't also have manual aperture control on them, but at the same time, I love how my lenses look. Sure, there are varieties of most of them for other mounts as well, but I also have a stills camera that I can use these lenses on with no problem.

And mind you, most of my lenses are actually NOT by Canon, but they are EF mount. (Not that I have any problem with Canon lenses either).

My issue as well is, I use a crane. Do I want a fully manual lens when my camera is up on the crane with no iris/focus control? No. It's a pain in the neck to not be able to make adjustments on the fly when I need to.

And I never use auto anything on my camera.

I don't know how you're viewing the footage, but on my end it looks way better than most DSLR footage I've seen (taking into consideration the whole Vimeo compression).

The same way one works with any camera... by attaching a monitor via HD-SDI. In fact, this camera is MUCH better positioned to use external monitors, compared to ANY other DSLR currently out there. Mini-HDMI is an AWFUL connector.

I think the orginal point was that waveform from the cam does not exist without an external device. Boo Hiss.

But... does waveform exist on ANY current DSLR without an external device?

I'm still trying to figure out why a waveform is necessary... it's a RAW camera... if anything, Predator Mode would be more welcome than a waveform, and even that only reports back what the viewing LUT displays. You'd have to switch to RAW, then monitor scopes, whatever, then back to the LUT.

The learning curve, it will be too big for some.

Any one know if there is punch in focus assist?

This is one of the better interviews with a BM rep at NAB I've seen. The BM rep was asked that directly and danced around the question. He did end up showing focus peaking, but he was sharp enough that if it had 1:1 mode/punch-in I think he would have shown it. But punch-in ain't rocket science, so seems it could be added easily.

Predator mode or histogram - whatever is easier to implement, or both. Fine with me. Definitely don't like Zebras as the only option.

But, you are taking a crop of the center of the image as well, so how much of the distortion you get I think changes as you go out with the wider lenses. That's been my experience.

If you want to see what the distortion looks like with the Sigma 8-15mm one a small sensor camera go to this page and find the picture with three levels of selectors below it, the middle ne is the digital crop.
