Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

Do you know the actual crop factor when shooting with EF lenses ? :)
I heard some say it's 2.3x

I think 2.18x is floating in my head.

You know I'm not that obsessed with CROP factors. It's misleading for starters. I'm used to S35 more than 135 FF. So I'm already working with a so called *crop* factor. The crop factor is only when you compare to something else.

John, if there's any way you can, tell them to put the I/O ports on the right side of the camera, not the left. This way, on a shoulder, the cables don't stick out into your face.

To settle the question of whether this cam is using CMOS or CCD, there is a bit of rolling shutter distortion visible John Brawley's "Dusk" video. Some of the quickly passing cars and trucks look to be skewed. It's not bad, but it's there. All things considered, I'm not going to complain.

It's most definitely CMOS.

many independent companies produce s35 sensor but what i seen they are all 8-12 MP ...
thats 300-450 MB/S @24fps ...to much data for many ssd....
Too much if uncompressed, yes. But CineForm RAW would reduce that to about 35-50 Mbps (4K at 24 fps), which is less than 2K CinemaDNG (which is uncompressed). David Newman has said that CineForm -- and now Go Pro -- would love to license the codec to a company that would develop the ASICs to perform real-time encoding. Who knows, maybe G0 Pro and Blackmagic Design are collaborating on an S35 4K next-gen camera even as we speak.

That is exactly what Blackmagic is saying, on the show floor; when I asked the rep on the floor what the sensor size was he said (and I quote) "Four Thirds." But the released specifications show that it isn't Four Thirds at all. I don't know why they're saying Four Thirds; maybe they don't know what else to call it? But yeah, it's not 4/3.
This is funny. You, an authority or expert as you wish : ) acknowledged worldwide, to listen this. Go figure if you'd ask twice, they could even insist they knew more on the subject matter than the inquirer in front of them wondering and insisting on it : D It happens all the time with me and many others we all know.

Been reading through all 58 pages and boy, do I feel dizzy! Does anyone know if autofocus will be implemented in the final release version, or as a firmware upgrade in the immediate future? Considering the capacitative touch screen, an autofocus feature which uses it would be brilliant! Even if it is not full, continous AF, it would still be a huge aid to one man bands who don''t have focus pullers. From my limited experience, when available and used properly, autofocus is always better and faster then manual, except in ciritcally low light or very fast, chaotic scenes.

No. :-)

BMD do things their way. They asked my opinion, but they have rationales for the choices they make,. So far, I've seen it go from one guy with a idea to make a frame store for Telecine suites into a multimillion dollar company. They like to do things their way and respect to them for doing it.

They wanted to start from scratch with their version of a camera. this is it.

yes but there is a problem with global shutter mode ...
u lose dynamic range ....about two stops ....Cypress (they design ALEXA sensor) offer global shutter but ARRI didnt want to lose DR....
Yes, but 88 dB is nearly 15 stops, so 15 - 2 = 13. Thirteen stops (or 13.5, in some places) is what they claim.

im not sure but i think its a CCD sensor... i can see some blooming in Beach Dusk video... a the beginning in car headlights ....
not just that ...colors and organic look... characteristics of the CCD sensor...

nooo..CMOS

just some lovely Leica R's.....

I was wondering if twixtor could be used with this camera to get slow motion footage or would there be too much twixtor artifacts with this camera?

They are still working on this, but 800 native is where they are heading for.

jb

They are "working on it" and want to ship in July!?

They should better have some Chinese factory, pumping out thousand units a day right now, to meet the demand.

Often, when cameras shoot RAW, they record the whitebalance point set in the camera as metadata for monitoring purposes later. But let's see what Mr. Brawley actually says:
"Then of course, you can choose RAW. RAW simply means you get everything the camera produces. The only thing that’s baked into this file is the white balance point. Everything else is up for grabs. There is no reducing image resolution or colour compression. You get all that information and you can choose how you want it to look with the greatest range and flexibility."

Reading this, it does sound like the whitebalance could be actually baked in. Maybe not - but certainly possible based on his words alone. I would love to hear a little bit more about this...

My understanding is that the WB point is locked in. ISO is not.

This is not a big deal though. When dealing with RAW files, it's not that much of a stretch to push the files back around if you've not done the WB properly in the first place

This may be a dumb question, but how do you control the iris on an EF lens? I don't see a dedicated control wheel, dial whatever.

At the moment you step the iris up and down using the FF and REW buttons in 1/3 stop increments. This will be a user selectable amount and there is the IRIS button, which will do an auto expose.

Did he just said native 800 ISO and comes with 400,800 1600 ISO settings?

Now that´s interesting, I was under the impression it´s natively around 300 ISO.
If this is really true, it would be more lowlight sensitive than the FS100.
Actually more lowlight sensitive than anything else.
Exactly my idea. According to the footage, ISO 320 looks like. I've seen to be mentioned they intend ISO 800, but how they will manage to be able to get it, it is a mystery to me.

@John Brawley Great to see you answering questions. This camera gets me really excited.
I wonder how the audio is stored in the BMCC when using the RAW format.
The CinemaDNG specs says on page 25: "Audio is outside the scope of the CinemaDNG file format. MXF can combine audio with CinemaDNG essence".
Also what flavor of ProRes is used? Thanks.
