Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

So don't come and bullsh*t me about s16mm not being cinematic enough.

I think a number of Ingmar Bergman's films were shot on S16... Sven Nykvist wasn't exactly a hack.

What really helps S16 is very fast glass, so you can control the DOF. I think it would be fair to say that the Zeiss Master Primes for S16 have gone a long way towards making it a very viable format.

There used to charts in the back of the cinematographers manual that showed you at what stop you had to shoot in S16 to match the DOF of S35.

@John Brawle
sorry for confusion....

i like you natural style of shooting .... minimal grading and no sharpening is opposite of modern trends but makes image look like celluloid ... great

Babel and City of God do mix 35mm with 16mm.
But you are, of course, right. People tend to confuse "exteremely shallow DOF" with "selective focus" with "filmic look".

Add to that people confusing full frame for 135 still photography (5D etc.), with S35 (standard motion picture film).
A lot of people I talk to are under the impression that these two are the same. It drives me up the walls.

FF135 is more like Vista Vision and about twice the size of S35. The DOF is a lot more narrow, then with S35.
APS-C is a lot closer to S35 if you are going for a 'filmic' look.

Hey John, Just wanted to say thank you for your time and efforts with the test footage. After I saw it I placed my deposit down on the camera after your first test shoots and as someone who uses DaVinci and Scopes software and edits RED and DSLR footage here in Japan you sold me. I cancelled on RED twice with the Red One and Scarlet (I am sound and post guy) they were to much money for someone that's not a DP that why we rent them. But with this package I don't have to worry about making money on it. I can spend more money on lenses and support stuff and learn to shoot with no pressure. Now if you could suggest a few primes and a zoom that will make my day and package complete! san extra power and other kit needs

Dearest Admins !

Here is one of the reasons the BMCC needs its own section.
Thank you.

I'm the first to admit that I'm no colourist and I'm using a camera that has changing curves in a complicated application that I've never used before...(resolve)

I haven't seen the NEW version of Resolve that goes with this camera, but apparently it's much easier to drive.

jb

You and me both. I tried to color my feature dailies and thought they looked good, like earlier last year? Good wY to lear, but boy was it ugly.

Looking forward to learning how to track windows in resolve.

Red cameras are great, but this is easily the most film like camera I've seen since the Alexa. For a narrative indie production, price not being a concern, I'd probably go for bmc based on just what I've seen so far. This is beyond exciting, anybody preorder from coremicro? I just placed an order but not sure if they only authorized my card or actually charged it.

I hastily placed my order without discussing details with with their sales staff for fear of them selling out like other sites already have.

S16mm

Leaving Las Vagas, The Draughtsman's Contract, the list goes on.

you can't tell me the Draughtsman's Contract isn't Filmic.

Neil.

How can't it be? it's film ....
Digital is cold. Not organic like film. Sometimes adding some shallow dof is like painting the image, adding a bit of "organic" random shapes, and erasing some extra sharp and digital parts of the image. But it will never be film.
So why don't people take digital for what it is. A new way of telling stories. Just forget about film, it's sad but it's almost gone. I personally like more and more sharp digital, i never thought i would one day.

This is the first time in 4 years I've literally been forced to purchase a camera. Even with ultra-high value releases like the FS700, I still resisted.

No more.

It really is the dream camera/price point. Damn BMD you're good!!

Anyways, don't know what all this argument is about.

I've pre-ordered, and I'm happy, don't feel the need to convince anyone else, and the detractors aren't going to dissuade me.

If you like it get one, if you don't don't.

I've looked at the footage and speck, and I'm big enough to take the responsibility of making my own decision and don't feel the need to keep justifying it to people suggesting I'm wrong.

People seem to be looking for problems and short coming so they can gloat over them - perhaps they can't afford it or have just bought something else more expensive and lower specked, or perhaps they're use to other Cameras problems.

May be it is just that it seems to good to be true at the price point and the close delivery date.

I've taken to just calling 135-sized sensors 'Vistavision' exclusively. It just makes things easier (and sounds kinda cooler).

Hogwash. Any filmic look can be reproduced/emulated by digital in the hands of talented individuals. Film is dead, you can either mope around about it and revel in warped nostalgic affectation or you can move on with the rest of the community and help propel our industry and our respective crafts forward. Something like this BMCC would've been unfathomable even 3 years ago. The growth and progress has been exponential since digital was embraced by the majority, and its only going to get better.

I wonder how it's going to cut together with Canon DSLRs. I plan to buy this and use a T2i as a b-cam for low light or guerilla situations...

Come on! Drop the Film vs. Digital arguing! Start appreciating what is becoming available for us and stop derailing this thread with off-topic discussions.

Exactly. No point to emulate film. Let's go on. Kids who are born now will hate movies shot with film.

They will cut well, just make sure to degrade BMCC footage in post - apply hard clipping luma curve crushing the blacks badly and making the highlights awfully harsh :)
And yes - don't forget to add a lot of artificial sharpening with significant radius to add that false detail :)

Well you can cut almost anything together, just don't expect the color, sharpness/detail, dynamic range, or almost anything else to look the same. You could dull down the BMD footage to look like the t2i but you can't make the t2i look like the BMD.

I personally wouldn't bother mixing them, but that's me. The only thing I could see mixing is MAYBE a 5D in a closeup or something, if I needed that full-frame look for something specific. Besides that, the difference in resolution DSLR's and this thing have will be really noticeable I think.
