Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

also if you buy an external recorder, then the price will be higher than the BMCC. Also working with an external recorder - on smaller projects - can be a pita.

This is true, but I already own a Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle 2, so that cost issue for me would be non existent. One would need to get a Juicedlink type of device for audio tho. it was the 12 bit Raw and and true 10 bit ProRes/DNxHD is what did it for me. The full frame and the still capabilities were the only positives and that wan't enough to keep me.

The new Blackmagic Design camera has already picked up a huge Fanboy base before it's release much like the Red Scarlet camera did, with people putting down money before a fully functioning camera has even been released. I must admit that I am intrigued, but I would never put down my hard earned cash for a camera without testing it first. I would really hate to pay for a camera only to be a Beta tester, much in the same way that Scarlet owners are now, without full functionality & dealing with issues.

All the Best!

Wow... you miss this thread for a day and BAM it's over 1000 posts! Also, I can already see some massive redundancy occurring here... I guess people just don't have time to read over 100 pages. If only there was an easier way to track the conversation path...

Agreed 100%. THis sets a new benchmark for low-budget narrative filmmaking. I see little reason for someone to shoot a film with a $3000 DSLR now that this camera exists.

Lets expound on that for a second. What reasons would someone have to use a DSLR instead of this BMCC? Lets assume this person does not currently own a DSLR and is looking to purchase an HD camera for narrative work. Here's what I can come up with:

- Their budget is less than $3000. (can be circumvented by renting)
- They're already invested in other, non-compatible lenses (again, solved with renting; also additional mounts could come later)
- They will be extremely mobile, little chance to plug in power (could be solved with external power packs, have yet to see)
- They will shoot in extreme conditions where a touchscreen would be impractical
- They are creatively incorporating moire, banding, and aliasing into their film

Ya.. in other words, I can't think of a single reason other than they are adamant about purchasing but have a small budget, or touchscreen use will simply be impractical for them (in which case, they should purchase this anyway and just rent a different camera to shoot in the extreme conditions). Exciting stuff indeed.

This is a leading edge vs bleeding edge thing... I've always preferred the bleeding edge, thus embraced red early, 5d early, etc. Probably smarter to be a little more conservative, but when the 'better' machine arrives, I can't keep myself away, hard as I try!

... with a 90 minute rating on the battery (without external feeds) how much will IS functions powered from the cameras affect battery life?

Probably enough to make a difference. I can tell how it drains battery life on a DSLR. However, the battery thing is sort of being misunderstood but with good reason:

Think of it as it's still externally powered but the power source is endless as long as you have a charger and two batteries. The external batteries charge the internal constantly, you charge the externals.

12v-30v means power options are wide open. Its another expense, maybe not as cheap as GH2 batteries but it doesn't have I be as expensive as buy batteries to power a RED.

Cheexk out the bebob battery plate. That's kinda how this situation works.

I hope BMD provides a list of SSDs that will work best (throughput/reliability) with the camera...

We are waiting to see which version of SATA it is (2 or 3), but assuming it is just a normal SATA port... any modern, consumer SSD should be fine. The best options out there right now use SandForce controllers (look 'em up).

This is Fanboy hold over from Scarlet... this is Fanboy release!

FWIW, I heard a rumor that despite the number of units a dealer buys, BMD will be shipping only 10 units at a time to each dealer, to be fair to everyone. B&H gets 10, and then has to wait for all the other dealers to get their shipment, before BMD will send the next 10 to B&H. Also, as others have said, the consumer response for this camera is unprecedented.

This means if you want one, you'd better get in line soon.

I hope blackmagic sort the hiccups out so it works before they ship. The hyperdeck shuttles compressed stuff is problematic to say the least and I have seen artefacts not unlike the weird sun blocky stuff in that sunset shot (excuse my poor terminology) and others have issues too.
The hyperdeck shuttle compression in dnxhd and qt is beta at the moment so they are allowed, but I would feel a whole load more confident about this if they could get products they have out now working properly. Uncompressed works fine though.
despite this I have parted with money for a preorder. Lol I can't help myself.

one 2.5K RAW frame measures 5MB. Max framerate is 30fps. Max data write: 150MB/s
No need for SATA3 port, or SATA3 SSDs. What we need is an SSD, that can continuously write 150MB/s:) (some SSDs compresses data, but a RAW frame cannot be compressed)

I'm a big fan of having more than the minimum. While the extra umph! might not be "needed", it will be appreciated. And the price difference is becoming negligible. Also, SATA3 is backwards compatible with SATA2 so there is really no reason not to have it.

As for your speed requirements, here is a speed chart of the current king of consumer SSD (OCZ Vertex3, SandForce controller, SATA3): http://www.anandtech.com/show/4256/the-ocz-vertex-3-review-120gb/6

I don't know if resolve will be an option for those looking for a budget option, as it would be another $1k in hardware (Is far as I know)? And its setup for a calibrated tv monitor, not computer monitor?? From what I've read, CS6 might be the solution. It sounds like its supper fast. There might be a chance that we don't need resolve and speedgrade looks like a great grading app.

The competition is heating up with finishing apps, and I think that is why we are seeing all these drastic measures by companies.

Resolve does not need anything special for HD size- just some GeForce card with many CUDa cores and 1GB+ or RAM- no need for Quadro even.

This list is not specifically for the CinemaCam (for HyperDeck Shuttle instead), but I guess it's enough to have an idea:

Certified SSDs
The following SSDs are recommended for uncompressed 10-bit video capture:

OCZ 240GB Vertex 3
OCZ 480GB Vertex 3
Crucial 256GB C300
Crucial 512GB M4 (firmware 009)
Kingston 64GB SSDNow V+100
Kingston 128GB SSDNow V+100
Samsung SSD 830 512GB

Re #5: FWIW, their tech specs on the website says the following for the Thunderbolt port - "Thunderbolt port for capture of RAW video and audio".

Just a reminder. This thread relates to the BMCC.

If you wish to discuss other cameras, please start a thread directed to those other cameras.

The thread is remarkable in that it is long, has stayed on topic, and everyone is congratulated.

We wish to keep it that way.

Thanks.

Im compiling a list of questions for these guys post NaB to get answers for the community.

An intelligent, & well moderated, thread for requests would be great.

One relatively simple request would be for a behind-the-lens filter tray for NDs, & such. Like the ones used on super telephoto SLR lenses.

Best,
Bern
