Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

I've graded the sample screenshot - which is 8bit "only", - and look what I've got! This was about 6 nodes in Davinci. (and yes, a bit of sharpening, but still inside Davinci Resolve)

hey that looks great. A lot better than what I can do. i'm still using a single node....!

"So, whilst you might imagine that Digital Bolex backers are kicking themselves... You'd be wrong."
if they dont , they should...i would do best i can to take my money back...

@johnbrawley - just wanted to add my thanks to you for the time and care you took in testing the camera, and especially for your contributions to this thread. It could have gotten way off track without you.

Cheers,

Bill

I haven't seen this answered yet, but does the purchase of the camera actually include a SSD?

Also, do we know if the port is SATA2 or SATA3? That can make a big difference with transfer speeds if you buy SATA3 SSD with a SandForce chipset. Btw for everyone considering this, regardless of if it is SATA2 or SATA3, make sure you get SSDs with SandForce chipsets. They are the fastest available, and competitively priced.

You get NO SSD's....

One would hope not, they do have to make some money :)

And it wouldn't be wise to include SSDs to. SSDs get updated along with their prices very often. Imagine they would have to buy 10.000 SSD that would lose 20% of their price in app. 3 - 6 months. It's just not economical. SSD prices are constantly changing.

I applaud Blackmagic for keeping this under wraps until they had a ready pre-production prototype. I think it bodes well for the future of other cinemaDNG projects as well. I think anyone thinking of getting into that workflow should pick up this camera, even if 16mm is what they really want, I would. I can work with ProRes now and work out the kinks of Raw as time allows. By now we know how to work around jello, put it on a tripod, but you can't work around aliasing and moire.

Free copy of resolve gives you your workflow, granted the free version does most of that, but knowing that you are not limited is a bonus.

I think the other developers need to take a cue from this. Why buffer to ssd, then dump to small capacity cards, just make a door and remove the ssd.

- Don't make us buy over-priced propriety media. You may have needed that 5 years ago when you started development, but the world has changed.

- there is still a community that would take 16mm ccd to shoot action, don't give up on that, just meet a price-point.

As long as I knew I could get a similar look in the final grade, and had the budget for the workflow, I think one of these, or super35 next year, and a 16mm action cam would be a great combo. You can always use the smaller chip camera on wide, and big one for close ups.

John, thanks for the answer. Let us know about the SATA version if you get a chance too, thanks!

BTW, were you able to shoot any additional test footage yet as was discussed yesterday?

Also, this is the official post to bring this thread to 100 pages... crazy... so, to celebrate:

I have to wonder how many people who did are now regretting it.

A few will be saying the same about the BMC once it's really out there in the wild and it's numerous shortcomings become painfully obvious.
Impossible to judge a new player on a prototype and some early clips alone.

I'm in the middle of a shooting a national primetime TV series. I'm pretty busy right at this point in time ! I'll get to things soon...

Just echoing all the thanks in this thread. The sample videos were a great help in showing off what this camera can do and this has all been tremendously appetite-whetting. Cheers :)

Nice look but look at the compression artifact blocks in the sky! Unacceptable.

Thats what I got grading a log jpeg. (remember, when you shoot in log format, you will "stretch" the image to a normal contrast afterwards, so this will put the compression to a test. Anyway Even shooting with prores won't give you artifacts (as the Alexa shoots prores, and you can shoot in log).

so don't judge from a jpg:)

On paper, there aren't many especially for the price, so it'll be interesting to hear the delusional, entitled whining after the fact I guess.

You must get invited to all the parties. Seriously, I've seen you post almost nothing but insistent negativity in multiple threads about this camera (both here and at hv20). And most of it is non-sensical (like this jab at a graded version of a compressed screen grab from a compressed video). What's the deal? Are you an employee with a competing camera company?

.refocusedmedia.com awesome Hitler parody! Will share on my fb page. Cracked me up in so many places. Oh and by the way. Clean 1080P is all we need. Too bad so much faith was put into DSLRs as Video Camera proxies. As I said to a B&H fella about 3 years ago. Just wait till the Hybrid HD cameras evolve into the next gen HD cams. So here we are. My money goes to whichever company gets the WHOLE mix right, not just one or two pieces. This is definitely a great START.

WOW - this thread is a big one... almost at 1000 posts!

Plus it's kept pretty close to the subject matter too - not a lot of thread derailment...

Well - 1000th post in this thread!!!

This is my regular read - every time I log back on there's another 3 or 4 pages :)

Agree with everyone that this camera looks very interesting indeed... it will be interesting to see it in the hands of other shooters.
