Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

For reference, when did you shoot this stuff John?

I actually pass through your blog every so often since your Alexa tests and the project you me filmed you were on recently seems to be the same one when you had the camera. That's a few months ago?

All of these clips were shot within the last 4 weeks.

Maybe the dudes at Blackmagic are left handed, and thought they'd finally release a more left friendly camera.

As a right-handed person who actually would prefer to shoot left-handed, I don't mind the way they've done this ;)

But anyway, look at the form factor of this camera: on any sort of shoulder rig it's going to be positioned forward of the operators face, like a DSLR, so the screen and cables will not be near your ears but further forward.

Besides, this is what right-angle connectors were invented for weren't they? :)

Cheers

Neil

By the way, John, thanks from me also for shooting the test footage, providing such a detailed blog, and for posting on here, it's really appreciated

stop it already with the softness nonsense - even the red scarlet is not as sharp as some of the canons as you can see from this test
and still the dslrs looks like s**t and videoish compared to the red -

the bmcc looks like the camera that were all was waiting for - the issues i am concerned with are
can we live with the Aesthetics of s16 ?
and how much close can we get to a FF sensor DOF ?
would there be at least 720p 50/60 fps ?
are there gonna be different mounts or adapters for different lenses than EF ( nikon lenses and others )
would wide lenses could be used without hard vignetting ?
how would telephoto lenses would look considering the crop and would you abble to shot with telephoto and the rolling shutter ?

other than that RAW , 13f stops , and up to 1600 iso clean at that price - seems like a winner to me

This is a constant issue for people with RAW footage. RED is soft too out of the box.

You have to apply sharpening to stuff that started out RAW, period. Otherwise, it'll look soft.

The DSLRs are sharpening the footage coming off the sensor in-camera, as are the video cameras (F3, etc.).

This is correct and here's the reason. Not all operatives have the luxury of post, much less grading and sharpening in post. The vast majority of people using DSLR to make money (versus home movies ;) are ENG, Sports, Event (esp Bridal). To be profitable sharpening ought to be done in camera for this community. Post is a luxury afforded to Amateurs and Professionals that have the time and bandwidth to do it.

this camera is not for those who dont do postproduction ... simply as that ...asking RAW camera to be point and shoot is nonsense ...
there are lot of camera who do that...

It's 2.5K DNG, or SCALED 1080 from the 2.5K sensor for ProRes. Not Cropped or windowed.

I just want to confirm for everyone that the resulting 1080p file (assuming BM does the de-bayering as well as Red, which seems likely) will be incredibly sharp.

I shoot 2400x1200 with Super16mm glass on my Epic, and debayer to a 1080p deliverable, and it looks very, very good. Incredibly sharp (after the sharpening is applied, this is RAW after all ;).

Ha, glad I didn't dump any cash into that Bolex thingy! I have to wonder how many people who did are now regretting it.
Way to drop a bombshell BMD, you've caused quite a ripple and completely stole the show!
I love the look of this camera, but what excites me more is that BMD are simply in the game. I think we are going to see some very exciting developments and improvements from them in the coming months/years!

If you want no post and sharpening in camera, shoot ProRes or DNxHD. It's very much a point-and-shoot if that's what you want it to be. :)

John Brawley@
how does dynamic range compare with ARRI ALEXA ...it looks like that they very close...

I haven't done any comparisons.

Alexa is hard to beat. Their 13 stops is their own measurement, and I always find that those LAB measurements are always less that what is practicable in the field. Same with Alexa, same with RED.

It definitely craps on a 5Dmk2 for DR. I've shot side by sides of that and although the large sensor look is always nice, you will instantly see the difference in resolution and especially in DR.

@Erich Ocean
but even with prores u need to do same kind of postproduction ...
u cant just burn it on the blu ray disk and put it in the player....
@John Brawley
thanks

A lot of those outdoor shots from the sunset beach footage could fool me into thinking I was watching a clean transfer of super16mm. This seems to be a viable super16 replacement for $3000- crazy, cant wait to try it!

I think you would find, that the majority of us, who plonked down our money on the D16 are more than happy. They are both going to be excellent cameras. However, the Blackmagic camera has some bells and whistles that fall outside the remit of the digital bolex project, and similarly the black magic camera is lacking some very important features that are included on the Digital Bolex camera.

The Blackmagic will have the option of pre-debayered, pre-compressed recording for those who want to use them. When I put down my money on the D16, I did so knowing the camera would not ship with those kinds of features. I did so because I don't need or want those kind of features.

If I need to shoot a fast turn around project without Raw, I have an HDSLR which is perfect for that (T2i).

And, if a person does want to do fast turn around stuff with the D16, there is an HD-SLR additional module which will be released at a later date, that will provide exactly those functions.

What I need is a 2K Raw Digital Cinema camera. The D16 is exactly that, and isn't trying to be anything more than that. And, the fact that it has a sensor which is actually super16 sized, is exactly what I've been waiting for. The Blackmagic camera does not have a super16 sized sensor. The D16 has modular, replaceable lens mounts, which accept all the super16 cinematic glass out there. That glass will fully cover the D16 sensor... The blackmagic cannot use those amazing cinematic lenses, and does not (as yet) have replaceable lens mounts. The form factor of the D16 is also far preferable to that of the Blackmagic Camera.

So, whilst you might imagine that Digital Bolex backers are kicking themselves... You'd be wrong.

The blackmagic camera is a beautiful thing, and I may well get one at some point (if only for the fact that you'd be mad not to, given it comes with Resolve), it doesn't quite meet my needs as a Cinematic camera (odd sensor size and lens restrictions and form factor). The D16, however, does.
