FEATURE: blackhats - Another Reel One Entertainment Movie

Didn't realize how long I hadn't checked in.

I was out of town and only accessed internet with my phone which is cool but I find trying to keep up with forums difficult so I've been away.

We broke from the Holidays and pick up again this weekend on production. Lots of drama and issues with my work's firewall keep me from doing a great job on our official blog: www.blackhatsmovie.blogspot.com

However, I will be back on it soon with better updates.

As it is, there are a few pics that my producing partner put up from Day 1 of production as we shot on The Chattahoochee River in Roswell, GA

The IMDB page is up as well: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2157103/combined

I also got tasked with a ton of pre-production/re-write work for a project we hope to do This summer that kept me inactive on reportage.

In All we shot 5 days in December and have 22 more to go in January and February.

So, stay tuned and wish us luck in getting through it.

Thanks,

Martin

I officially placed my stamp on the thread. Ya'll are making it happen.

You'll get the blog up to speed. Hell, I haven't even added a picture to this site yet. Gotta add some to one of those 3rd party picture sites. I'll be watching. Tieuel Legacy! in Motion

I remember hearing about "Step Off", when you first sold it. It's great to see you having success and moving on to the next big project. Best of luck!

Thanks everybody for the well wishes.

Started back up this past weekend and had a good shoot. Shot atop the Hilton Garden Inn which is downtown and gives a great view of Atlanta. The footage should be very nice. About 35 extras got all dressed up for a party scene. It was pretty crazy but we pulled it off (I think).

Still 7 days in the can and 20 more to go :)

Couple of new photos (still day 1) up at the blog:

Ya'll have a few headturners in that scene. Always good to have good looking ladies in there somewhere.

Is the spot normally that lit up or is that production lighting? Nice lookin' spot. Tieuel Legacy! in Motion

Mostly production lighting. We did have one set of lights from the spot remain on but most of that is lit by our Gaffer.

The spot was very nice. Would love to have a real party there but probably couldn't afford it.

Yes, we have an attractive cast.

More to come.

25 Days in the can...4 more to go!

Well, 4 days of Principal and then Some Second Unit B-Roll (2 days) and we'll have it in the can.

Each week seems like the craziest challenge we've ever encountered until we meet the following week :)

Hope to do better on the blog and facebook pages once we've wrapped.

Getting excited about it now.

Man that article was DOOBIOUS! LOL

Good job Martin. I'm so glad you're getting your due. I keep telling everyone that you are one of the best producers in the A. I'm proud of you and glad that I know you. You seem busy this year though. I thought I had a lot on my plate, but gez man you got like 5 to 6 projects. I figured I'd be lucky to get through 3.

Let's continue your interview...

Q. Why do you feel that being at the screening is the best time? You said you like allowing the actors and crew to see the film, but is it the RED Carpet energy, the reaction of those involved with the enjoying of the project, the accolades of admirers?

Q. What makes The Great Martin want to do a project?

Q. What drives you to be so involved in ATL's movie community?

Okay,

Q1: Why is screening the best time?

Well, for me it's the best time because it's really the only time I get to truly relax on a project. The cast and crew screening (not festival or public premiere because I would still be worrying about attendance etc.) is all about the family that made the movie. And how we can finally share it as a whole with each other. I can re-congratulate everyone personally for their efforts etc. There's no red carpet aspect really (especially not for me) but it is a celebration of sorts. I think cast and crew (especially on micro budget work) feel much better about having spent their time on a project if the Filmmaker/Producer takes the time to be sure they have an opportunity to "see" the finished product. So, we try to make it an "event" even while it's not a public screening. It shows them how important we think their efforts were. So, that's why it's my favorite. It's a concrete opportunity for me to show my appreciation for everyone involved in the project and usually it is appreciated. I think that's why we get so many people who want to work with us again and again.

Now, the reaction is important too. And thankfully it's been genuinely (at least I believe) good lately. That's a nice cherry on top when the reaction is positive.

Q2: What makes me want to do a project?

Wow. That's tough. I always want to do projects. I've still got 23 out of 29 unproduced feature scripts :) Ultimately there are only a few of those that I would NEVER make. However, the momentum of a project has to be right. It has to be the right project at the right time. Step Off was totally the right project at the right time for me and things after that were wild, we had about 5 viable projects that we were thinking about taking on...blackhats just bubbled up to the surface magically through circumstances and it became THE one we wanted to take on...A Thriller, with the backdrop of computer hackers with a hint of Neo-Western...it just captured the team's collective interest more forcefully than some of the other projects we were developing. So, while it is fairly analytical process in many ways; what can we do on x budget, how can we do it, who do we want to work with, etc. It really has some intangibles that come into play that must push a project ahead. Funny you mention the article's plate but there's 1 more feature that could be in the mix for me as a writer/producer that just come up since then.

Q3:What drives me to be so involved in the Atlanta movie community?

I just feel like that you have to take responsibility for what you want. So, that means I had to take responsibility for my career as a filmmaker, and since I wanted Atlanta to be a better film community I felt I should take responsibility to help that happen. So, I started with the screenwriters group (which keeps going and growing and got a Nice shout out from the Atlanta Film Festival Director last night at one of their events) and then continued with the film magazine which went strong for a while and now plays a smaller role but I think in some ways paved the way for bigger outlets like Doobious to take it to the next level. And just by trying to make movies the right way even if I don't have access to huge pools of resources and we (my producing partner does this as well) are always open to helping others with advice (and sometimes free elbow grease) on their projects. So, in that way, we hope the whole community gets stronger and we'll all ride a nice wave. Plus, I just love being around movies and movie makers so it's a way for me to stay in the loop.

Thanks for the additional questions and reading the article. Hope you're good jls4.

Thank you so much for sharing with us today.

END Article -

That was good Martin. You have a good film-heart. You've always been one of the ones who've inspired me, I'm glad that so many people are taking note of you. Atlanta needs some good production companies to RISE UP (like the Falcons LOL). Keep it going!

Okay, quick update...we quietly WRAPPED principle photography this past weekend.

Now we still have about 2 pages of 2nd Unit/B-Roll shots that are vital but full crew and cast production has Wrapped! 28 Days shot!

The blog may get more life soon now that we're not sweating bullets in terms of coordinating locations and cast and crew schedules.

Stay tuned!

Quick update.

We've done a massive amount of B-Roll since wrapping principle photography on blackhats.

We hope to have a Poster released soon as well as a trailer shortly after. This will be a very huge post production effort as we shot far more than on our previous feature, Step Off.

More to score, more to edit and color correct...the good news is the footage is pretty sweet.

Sounds like ya'll are on your way. I'll have to stop by the blogspot to see more updates. Keep pushin'.

Can't wait to see it!

Thanks!

I should ANNOUNCE that we'll be doing a contest related to blackhats called CRACK THE CODE which will launch on Sept 1st.

All the rules will be posted then but it will consist of character cards from the movie to be 'virtually' collected each day for 10 days that contain clues to 'crack' the code.

Entrants will be able to send their answers in to be eligible for prizes which will be announced when we release the 1st Trailer for blackhats.

So, just stay in the loop and hopefully some dvxusers will participate and CRACK THE CODE to blackhats.
