I put the H264 files straight from the camera into Vegas and the video preview is completely black. I have Cineform to convert, but I have so many GBs of footage, I'd rather just use the originals. Any suggestions?

It's an issue with Quicktime.
You should downgrade latest good version of quicktime, or upgrade vegas.

You don't mention which version of Vegas you're using, but if you upgrade to Vegas 10 there's no issue with quicktime/.mov files in Vegas. If you have vegas 9 or earlier I think you need QT 7.6.6.2 or earlier. But... I think there's also an issue in Vegas 9 where the video preview defaults to the trimmer window. You need to change one of the trimmer window settings - if I recall, it might be the either the "Show video monitor" or "Trimmer on external monitor" buttons in the trimmer window.
