Black pixel row at the bottom

Matt, could you give me an idea of how to setup the picvideo codec for the D90 files?

Also, I'm now getting confused about how the D90 movies should look originally with the different codecs. In the picvideo settings, decompressor with "Assume Normalized YUV" checked gives me more details in the blacks but seems a bit washed out. Unchecked gives stronger blacks but less details. The colors pop-up more with stronger blacks but I have a feeling that it's not the way it was recorded. I'm I supposed to see them with as much detalis in the blacks as possible and then CC them to my liking?

Thanks...

normalized for sure. the lcd on the camera shows a much punchier image than what's recorded. yes, it's better to get a flat original and grade it to taste. i use a custom curve too that lifts the blacks, which when i push them back in cc creates a much cleaner image than shooting at a higher contrast.

Alright, thanks! I've been reading a bit about RGB levels and was trying to figure out which RGB level makes more sense for a music video since it will be played on computers (internet) and hopefully be broadcasted (0-255 vs 16-235)?

computer codecs are usually smart enough to show black as black regardless, and rgb to yuv conversions usually map 0 rgb to 16 y, but the superwhite issue is definitely a concern. i always use a broadcast safe filter to bring it to legal specs. this actually allows individual rgb levels to go above 235, but not the luma in yuv space. it still means a slight loss of headroom for computer playback but you rarely see the difference, especially if you also desaturate the highs a bit to avoid chroma banding. good luck.

So it should be best to work at RGB 0-255 and then to run it through a broadcast safe filter, right?

i always work in yuv so i'm not sure, but yeah that sounds like a good plan. what codec are you using for rgb? the d90 shoots yuv and most codecs used for delivery too so if your nle supports it i don't think you want rgb.

Oh, maybe I'm confused. In the AviSynth script, the file is converted to RGB for the fix to work, is it still YUV when it's saved with VirtualDub?

vd tells you what it is and you can convert it back and forth as you want. what it's saved as depends on the codec and your settings.
