Black Magic PocketHD and 4K production camera

But were at a point to were we are willing to deposit on a device without indication of performance. When you buy a car do you just slap your down payment and sign the dotted line? No, you take it for a test spin. Not trying to bash BMC or RED, but let's get realistic here.
Look at the as seen on TV type product that says "money back guarantee". Most of the products are complete trash, just worthless POS's. It's that hook of "money back guarantee" that sells to the buyer the "if I don't like it I'll get my money back". Well as it turns out, well over half those purchases never get returned because people are too lazy to go through the process. That or there is a hitch like re-stocking fee. So it just gets tossed in the dump and the company makes it's buck. Sure, a bit different with a camera. But still, they are selling hope and not performance defined. I find it a strange model for consumerism. Top that off with "that will come in a future firmware update". Really??? How often do you hear that these days? I understand getting your product to market, but COME ON. With BMD and their camera product, they made TWO NEW cameras before they could supply any simple firmware updates like a better battery readout or VU meters. Instead of supporting the existing product with all sorts of shortcomings, they went on to make two new products with the EXACT SAME PROMISES? "Shipping this July".

Not a single working image to gauge off from the BMC4k and they're going to ship in July? Reminds me of doing my book report the night before it was due. Rushed.....Rush to market and figure it out later with "that will come in a future update" or "we're seriously looking into that".

Dusty.....

We all want to see footage, but knowing that BlackMagic is a top of the line company we do not have much to worry about. Worst comes to worst we cancel our orders and keep shooting with our Dslrs......

At the end of the day live life, stop stressing and believe. BMCC has an amazing image, pocket cam will be similar, that's all that matters and will be basically their 1.5 revision of the camera as well as the new 4k. Things will only get better from here
peace

As far as I'm concerned, This camera might as well have 16k, raw @ 2,000 fps, with a global shutter, AND for 200.00 bucks. Because this company doesn't know the first thing about mass producing a camera thats readily available for purchase. What a complete joke the first cam was. Have they even started shipping the m4/3rds mount they took deposits on almost a year ago? And people are throwing out deposits on this already, Now that's funny. Panisonic, sony, and Canon have all had some excellent cams in the past, but I can you this, I still wouldn't buy one of their cams without actually seeing footage, or spending some time with the cam.

First, do you have a BMC? (little hint. I have). But ordering and returning or canceling upon disappointment is not my point. See, I'll stand in a line for a product. I've stood in line to get concert tickets for example. But I did it knowing what the product is (being I've seen the bands last tour). It's safe to say the BMCv1 EF mount does in fact capture a nice image without a doubt. It's a very capable camera, especially for the price. But there are compromises as well. We can all go look on vimeo a ton of 1 or 3 minute videos showing off the camera. Maybe even a small short that consists of a scene or two. Soon we'll see more in depth and higher produced things filmed with it. But what I've seen and read mostly is "how BMD makes Canon, Sony, Panny, RED and the others fail in comparison" type arguments, and from people that haven't even shot with the camera that likely are still standing in line for concert tickets. Then I read a post saying, "I switched my preorder from the EF BMC to the BMC 4/3's and now I'm switching to the BMC4k and ordered a BMPC as a B cam" all while possibly waiting for a camera since late July 2012. But this time without seeing a single frame grab. Let's just say there's no "Reverie". Just a very attractive price point and some specs (for the new cameras that is). So here we might go again. An attractively priced what we want and clamor for camera with specifications that should cost a lot more, shipping in July. Any takers? For sure and no doubt there are. But not a single frame grab? Even from the BMPC that cost $995 and is in John Brawley's hands for some time now?

I don't blame BMD for their setbacks. But it did happen. We all know the story and many of us lived or are living it. But here we are NAB 2013 and we have two new cameras when BMD has an MTF model that many are still in the dark about when they're preorder is possibly outstanding for coming up on a year. You got guys that are waiting weeks for replacement of an incorrect flange mount fix. Again, were at NAB 2013 with these shiny new offerings, "Shipping July" :2vrolijk_08: Well, when am I gonna get my BMC 4/3 mount? Come to think of it, I don't even think I've seen or heard a single NAB interview on that very topic. They've gone from 1 camera to 2 cameras to now 4 cameras to manufacture while the 2nd camera is still basically Bigfoot. We've spotted him but few have ever seen it. 4 cameras, 1 smaller and more complicated to put together, 1 where more people have seen Bigfoot, and 1 where just recently a single distributor as a couple in stock on an e-bay store. "But hey, whats to go wrong while things are still going wrong"?

It's cool. I'll look into buying one. After all, I did buy the OG BMC. This time however I'm going to caution my expectations. But not on the image. The image is there. I'm pulling for BMD and I'm a fan of what they're doing. To their credit. they've announced 4 cameras that break ground and price within a year. My overall point is let's stop announcing and get what you've announced into our camera bags. We're even willing to buy them without seeing frame grabs. :cheesy: Ya got cameras to build...

4K for $4K, and with global shutter? That's very tasty and congrats to BMD for it's reality.

If you're gonna rant, try and get the facts right. The m43 version was announced in September.
But there are lots of people who put deposits down on the EF and switched to the m4/3. So in fact there are plenty of cases of people still waiting on essentially a year old preorder and are thinking of falling for it again.

There was one of the first video out of the BM pocket and I think it was someone filming and then Dan chung was just by and they pan the camera from side to side from a tripod and both were saying that the rolling shutter was very low. I forgot which one it was but just have to search for it.

i do feel for anyone still waiting for their original BMCC order.... But if they transferred their order, in September, they started at zero again.

Maybe some cheap LCDs are displaying their images one line at a time, like an old crt, instead of refreshing the whole display at once. You might see one frame of the video being drawn top-to-bottom over the previous frame if the refesh is slow enough. I imagine that this rolling-refresh would look very similar to rolling-shutter. That might explain what's going on in the D5200, and maybe in the BMC-Pocket. That's just a guess' of course.

My Ipad 2 does this if i swipe 4 fingers between programs fast enough.

^ Apple surely would call that a feature. "Dynamic transition animation", or something like that :)

Dustylense had a big point: you can't judge rolling shutter of a camera out of a recording from a camera that has rolling shutter. If this clip was recorded with a 5D2, you're basically adding the RS of the pocket BMC to a percentage of the RS of the 5D2 (a bigger percentage the more part of the 5D2 frame that the pBMC screen is taking) --> no wonder it looks awful!

I'm bored of the guessing game: wait and see...

This thread, like too many others, has turned toxic. Egos and attitudes abound.

Nah! Just the usual nonsense that follows the announcement of a hot new camera, or in this case two. It is just "talk" from "the experts" here. In the meantime you have Brawley, LaForet and company doing the real work out there. In the case of Black Magic Brawley is the real deal, everybody else here is on the outside looking in. Once he reports we will have real details. In the meantime enjoy the circus atmosphere.
