Black Magic PocketHD and 4K production camera

That video brings up an interesting point at the end. Since there is only a $1000.00 price difference between 2.5k and 4k who would make the decision to save a few bucks and go with the 2.5k going forward. It is still a great camera but wouldn't the 4k camera be a bit more future proof? To me it seems like there will be very little market for the 2.5k camera. If there was a bigger price difference I could see an argument about which to get but in this case in all honesty $1000.00 is not a lot of money if you have use for a camera like this.

Does anybody here think they would still prefer the 2.5k camera? Now what if the price of it drops to $2000.00 after the release of the 4k, would it then make more sense to get the 2.5k version instead? Still is $2000.00 even worth the savings?

Does the "active" mount on the Pocket cam enable all functions with m4/3 lenses or just power (manual) focus (by wire) (and/or possibly power IS, too)?

All I can say is Goodbye Canon for good..........

GH3 and the pocket BMCC will be the Death of Many....... BMCC 4k when the production calls for it.

The Future is NOW

I don't think the C300 Has anything to worry about. It will still be the preferred broadcast camera, I suspect.
For digital cinema, the C500 and the 1DC looks like they will be in trouble.

Have you even shot with a Canon? Forget price for a second here oK? You really think the Gh3 is a better image than the C line?

Sure, you get a stop more dynamic range and the flexability of the mft mount. Add a speedbooster and keep in mind your delivery is probably only 1080 for most things. Seems like a great camera to me. Also the 4k cam has a different sensor so its still unproven how good it looks. It might have a different quality to its image so maybe a creative choice as well??

My latest unreleased project was shot on a C300, then another on an Epic.
For price/quality and working how I want to from now onto the Future I stand by My statement 1000%.

BMCC I like better
Peace

Haven't gone through the thread and probably the analogy was already made, but this is the game changer, the new "DVX", the new 5D, the camera EVERYONE, from indie to hollywood studio will have, either for A cam or B cam. Didn't see this coming. I'm a Red Epic owner, but cannot hide my excitement for this true step to leveling and "democratisation" of filmmaking.

Great times for everyone. Will I get one? Between this and the Dragon update I'm torn...

Prores 4K on board capture is a true game changer. Well done Black Magic. They are doing an (early) "Apple" in terms of the Production and Post-production world (Like they did for high end post production with Final Cut). Guess I really need to learn DaVinci now. Only outsourced my grading but since I'm not happy with both Final Cut X and Premiere, maybe learning the new Resolve would be "it".

Again, great times, and great move by Blackmagic design. Still remember the early days struggling to get DOF and somehow "Broadcastable" footage from my Sony TRV 900, then the 24p revolution with the DVX, the P2 HVX200, 35mm adapters like the brevis, the DSLR revolution, RED and now this!

What is really sad is that I paid more for my Canon XL1 when it first came out. I think it was around $4,500.00 at that time.

They had a Lumix 7-14 mounted on one. It worked. Focus, iris, and zoom. It doesn't have OIS so I couldn't test that.

Thanks, Barry! If you or anyone else has a chance to test with, say, a 14-140mm, I'd still be very interested to know if either AF-Tracking or O.I.S. works. (I'm guessing "no" on tracking, but hoping "yes" on O.I.S.)

I just bought a GH3. When I can walk into a store and buy a BMPRO I might get one of those too. While everyone is stressing over their preorders I'm gonna be out shooting (in slow motion).

I might just have to get a GH2/3 as well while I wait for my Pocket cinema camera pre order to arrive... can use the same lenses, and I won't regret having the GH for photos and excellent video one bit ;)

Two things about the BMCC, first it's 13 stops of DR instead of 12 on the BMPC, that may be important to some folks, second, the RAW is uncompressed while the RAW on the 4k is compressed. The BMCC is currently shipping in some quantities so if you can do a job or 3 with it before the BMPC arrives next fall or winter or spring, it should pay for itself.

Also important to stress besides the DR is that this is a totally different sensor from a totally different manufacturer. Therefore the image quality may not be as good. It may not have that bit of magic that the BMCC has that reminds me of the Alexa. Also, I read the ISO would be slightly lower and I believe it will only support prores 4k when it is released and they will add the compressed raw support in a future upgrade. This I got from the blog of the guy who is field testing one I believe. Image quality differences including dynamic range is going to be the key thing to watch for to me.

Will this new EF MOUNT 4K version be able to use the image stabilization of the Canon lenses? That is one thing I would really like to see.

Also, did anyone else notice that BH PHoto started discounting the Canon c100 $1000 today to a sale price of $5499? They also have a bundled price for the canon c100 with 24-105L for $6099. If you bought your c100 in the last month or so, that's a big ouch. Glad I waited for NAB.

You can't just forget about price when you're comparing a $1200 camera to a $10-30k camera... he obviously likes the gh3 for the price and for 1200 the gh3 is 100x better than any canon dslr in that price range, even the OMG 5mk3!
