Black balance

Hi,

Does somebody could explain to me how to make a black balance - for the 24 or 25p in my case (PAL)? In wish situations is it necessary to do it ?
Thank you.
Al .

"black balance" is the calibration of the camera's circuity so that it produces the right "color" 'black'.
It's something that is worth dooing occasionaly, thoguh not as often as white balance.Maybe once a week.. month, ish.. If you change to another environment - bgi taperate changes, etc, then it might we worth dooing again.

What mode the camera is has no effect on black balance.

Hello,
And how to do ?... the same as with the white balance, but in a black zone, in the place I want to shoot in ?
Thank you.

if you hold down the White Balance button for a while, it will switch to Black Balance. i assume you will want to aim at a black surface while doing this. Am I right, folks?

Black balance is done on black (as you correctly asssume) but the only way to get "true" black is to block all light.

During black balance, a camera closes it's iris all the way and then balances to that lack of light.

Just an aside - The first 4-5 times I white balanced, I didnt know about the black balance and would hold then button in while pointed at a properly exposed white surface. It white balanced just fine doing this. And for those without a white surface, but if you have a photographic nuetral grey surface - it will WB correctly to that too - either using WB or BB. It just needs a photographic nuetral surface to balance too - white or otherwise (not all white surfaces are created equal).

Setting the white balance with a spectrally flat source will achieve the proper relationship. An 18% gray card has some advantages in some situations as it won't be as likely to be blown out. If all you have access to is a neutral white source, check to see that it is not overexposed, if it is, just iris down to keep it well below 100%.

If you try to use a source which is well above the dynamic range of the camera (greater than 109%) you can end up with a false balance in some cameras.

Clear... clear ! An other little question : how to make a WB whan you're shooting in the night without any artificial lights ?

Well, presumably you are shooting with *some* light.

Just use somethign white under whatever conditions you are shootign in and WB off that.

"Well, presumably you are shooting with *some* light."
I was talking about "artificial lights"... Why not in space... °)
Ok thank to every one. Wish you a good day & good night with or without ligths; dreams for sure
