Birger Mount

Actually, I think it's the OPPOSITE of encouraging; IMHO they shouldn't be spending time experimenting with any other mounts (and esp. releasing pictures publicly) until the first-promised AF100 version is actually out the door.

Actually, I think that all the negativity expressed here in this forum has led Eric to concurrently develop several versions of the EF mount, rather than concentrate solely on the AF version, which from his point of view, is probably good business sense.

Oh, please. I hightly doubt he would have such a childish reaction to the fair and legitimate criticism of the ongoing, and very real pre-annoucements and subsequent delays that have occurred.

Sure, it's good business to make adapters for numerous cameras, but at the rate they move, the cameras will be outdated by the time the adapters are made! Seriously, delays happen, but communication is optional. I think Birger has been lousy at updating and reaching out to their customer base (their website doesn't even work properly) and even the retailer I spoke with is frustrated with their slowness and silence.

. . .the cameras will be outdated by the time the adapters are made!

. . .or there will appear a big sensor Canon video camera designed to compete with the AF100/FS100 that takes EF mount lenses native.

In the old days they used to call things like Birger mounts "vaporware".

That'd be sweet... and it's still called vaporware, though in this case maybe heavy vaporware? Meh...

I have the RED version of the Birger mount.
This current situation is similar to what was experienced when the RED version was made
albeit with a bit less drama.

It seemed like the RED version would never get finished but it did and it surpassed all of my
expectations. After almost 3 years I'm still using it and even received an upgraded version for free.

I agree that Birger can improve communications in the forums but I can also say that they are very accessible and helpful
in providing tech support to their user base.

Yes it's frustrating but chances are high that the mounts will be done for the various announced cameras.

The one rule of thumb is to not plan a shoot around an announced product launch or time table.
That can naturally lead to disappointment. Ultimately the product is released when it's released.

Hang in there. The mounts will get done.

Speaking of "vaporware" I emailed them on July 29th and did get a reply from Erik Widing himself on August 8th. Here is what I wrote to Birger:

Sure you get this a lot but, WHEN WILL THE EOS ADAPTER BE AVAILABLE?

This is something I am highly interested in as are several other shooters. However, over the last few years we shooters have been cruelly taunted with suggested releases of vaporware.

I understand there are changes in designs and manufacturing and other factors but telling us the mount will be shipping by May then failing to deliver and not producing any information regarding when it will be available is just not cool.

You let the cat out of the bag by publicly displaying the product then announcing a delivery date. The least you could do is inform the many shooters who are waiting on you to give you their money what the hold up is and give us a REALISTIC date when we can get our hands on one.

I hope you will give us an update. Many of us can deal with waiting as long as we know why we are waiting and how long the wait will be.

He replied with:

I thank you for sharing your opinion. But, until we are ready to announce a firm ship date, we will not offer any projected schedule. We have not announced the ship dates or dealers yet. To receive the updates, please segn up for the "general news" email list on birger.com.

Regards,
Erik.

He says "we have not announced a ship date yet" On the DSLR News Shooter website, Dan Chung posted a video from NAB back in April interviewing Erik. On this video:

http://vimeo.com/22244721

At 17:36, Dan says "How much and when?" Erik replies "End of May" among other information.

End of May? That would've been the third or fourth promised release date. All broken. Oh well, I'll believe it's being released when I have a working adapter on my camera.

I just don't get why almost everybody is so upset. The biggest problem is the customer.... don't make plans to use stuff that doesn't ship yet, even if shipping dates are promised: Problem solved! Delays just like that happen all the time, and people should know better by now. Just think about Scarlet, the original Red, Epic, the Redrock Mattebox, the Redrock Remote Follow Focus, Original Birger Mount, Shoot35 Mattebox..... just to name a few.

I'm not making plans to use the adapter today. I have a Canon DSLR and a small handful of EOS lenses. I have old Nikons and an Olympus lens for my AF for now, so I am covered. I get pissed at these companies dangling a carrot in front of us to gauge a response to their goods. Then they disappear with no communication. The fact is that an adapter the lets you control iris on EOS lenses is a tool I can use that will broaden my palate of glass. I'll repeat what I emailed to Birger. I think most folks here can deal with the wait if the communication is there as to why there is a wait.

With all that said, RedRock is in a best position to steal away customers from Birger, yet they are on the vapor trail as well.
