Birger Mount Videos

I have been reading the forums here for a while (Since I am getting an AF-100) and understandibly, there is a LOT of interest in the Birger Mount.

Rightly So. It's amazing.

I was one of the first to do a segment on this mount for my web-series INFO-TECH. In fact we even did a separate video for installing the mount on the RED ONE, and also setting it up.

There is a lot going on with this mount right now, and some very cool additions / changes are being made as we speak (Not sure what I am allowed to say at this point.. So I'll play it safe)

If you are interested in seeing what the 1st Gen Birger Mount was like on the RED ONE, and a basic overview, then feel free to check out this video:

Now don't give me any grief over the set and quality, this was VERY early on when INFO-TECH was just getting started!

Of course we will be doing ALL NEW modules on the Birger and videos SPECIFIC to their operation for the AF-100. Some of this will be on our new website, and a lot of it will be on the AF-100 DVD when it comes out.

I'll keep you informed!

I can tell you from using this mount a lot that it's incredible. HOWEVER there is one major thing you need to be aware of: Because the mount makes use of the motors INSIDE the lens, the better then lens, the smoother the focus. If you use the mount on a $300 lens, expect some jerky movements. If you use the mount on an "L" series $1,500 - $2,000 lens... It will be like butter!

wow, that's really amazing. Really opens up the possibilities. Steadicam operating or any type of crane shot would be a breeze.

Exactly, a lot of people are talking about some sort of Auto focus, but what is needed is FOCUS CONTROL. Many times the main subject in the picture is not what the director will want to focus on.

It's going to be great.

Slightly off topic but I was wondering if they will be making one of these for the Sony F3 as well??

As long as there is enough distance from the sensor, it's actually not that hard for Erik to convert the mount to work with Sony. RED was a pain, but these new cameras are coming READY to swap mounts.. So there should be very little if any trouble making the Birger Moun work with the new Sony.

That would be a wonderful addition, I had seen your video review a while back and fell in love with that mount, I watched the whole thing Just wanting it more every second. I have a question, I go to the Birger site but theres no information on anything or even how to buy... Is the site going to be updated anytime soon? its been like that forever.

Erik decided long ago not to be one of those Engineers who constantly say "It's coming" but it never does. So he stays quiet until he KNOWS it's coming out. However unlike some he has a good track record with the mount for other products.. I.E. RED ONE. He knows the AF-100 is around the corner, and I am quite sure he will be ready.

Really glad you like the videos.. You ain't seen NOTHING yet..

Hey Jay - looking forward to what you can spill on birger for m43, I think its going to be hot hot hot
can anyone post the flange distances for EOS and sony? Judging from the earlier post it is compatible then?

I do not have the distance offhand (I bet Barry does) but I do know that the Birger is slated for the AF-100... No doubt in my mind there. Pretty sure the Sony also.
Jay

got it, for reference
sony e mount ... 18mm
pana m43 ... is 20mm
canon eos ... 44mm

birger should have no problems then, looking forward to seeing canon L glass on both the f3 and the af100

Yeah... I don't know where Erik is on Nikon.. There was talk of it early on, but it never went anywhere.. I would GUESS that if he ever takes that on, it will be AFTER he's done all he can do with Canon

No need to guess, that's pretty much exactly what he said. He's interested in Nikon, but the Canon comes first.

I am aware of this statement.. He's said it to me a number of times, however this subject has not come up in the last few months, and I am usually pretty careful when speaking about other people to use accurate and current information. Since I did not have this in regard to Erik's Nikon program, I felt better safe than sorry.

Are they still planning a release before the AF100 ships? I've been checking the website to pre-order but the website hasn't changed in a LONG time. :)

I talked with Birger on the phone about a week ago. And they assured me that if you join their mailing list, you will be notified when the the adapter is available, they are not taking pre orders.

They also assured me it would be available late December when the AF100 ships.

My 2 cents for what it is worth. Probably 3 cents less than a nickel.

Thanks for the update, I will go look at adding myself to their list.

I talked to them today and they said we could expect to get an e-mail next week with some info on the adapter! I am really looking forward to this info as I have held off on buying other 4/3 lenses.
