Hi, recently been moving a lot of data around on various cards drives and p2 stores on my mac and have have wildly variable mileage. But first some ground rules-
USB 480 megabits per second= 60 megaBYTES per second
Firewire 400 =400 megabits per second= 50 megaBYTES per second
Firewire 800= 800megabits per second= 100 MegaBYTES per second
We all know this is theoretical max speed, real life sustained transfers tend to be much slower. I don't know why, but beside the point at the moment.
We also know USB speeds are never close to theoretical max and are worse on mac vs pc
Also Panasonic in infinite wisdom put only USB on p2 store.
Whenever i do transfers on mac I use activity monitor to monitor speed
Generally a good p2 store dump (usb into computer- firewire 400 or 800 to external drive) runs around 12 megabytes per second with it downshifting when it gets to audio to 5 megabytes per second- this is using p2 genie.
A transfer from FW400 drive to FW800 drive 20-23 Megabytes per sec, again less than half top speed.
But here'sthe rub- inixplicably sometimes transfer speeds drop to 5-6 megabyte per second- that's 3 hours to dump p2 store. Come on people we can do better.... once it gets stuck at that speed nothing will speed it up. it will stay there. Even between FW drives speed is wretched. Only solution reboot and start again.
Did i mention all this voodoo with computer is making me start to hate them?
and don't get me started on p2 driver glitches with mac....
So, anybody have any insights on things that can hamper speeds like this or even better, possible fixes? Do other people have similar issues? In my case i am running powerbook g4 1.67Ghz with 2 GB ram
