FS5: Big news around the FS5 this week

The "Big News around the FS5" in the tweet that started this thread refers to an update to Dennis's book about FS5.

Yes the tweet refers to a publication which I'm known for "ultimate exposure guide" for Sony s35 cams… looks like someone at alpharumors combined that with the Sony IFA event and it exploded from there.

About a MK2 I think it's a bit too soon. Also don't really see what else can be added to the camera feature wise that isn't codec related - as any significant changes around the codec would put it too close to the FS7 etc..

I would not necessarily completely rule out a FS5 MkII announcement from Sony at IBC in September as Sony have release a number of improved camera models/iterations at a rather rapid rate over the last few years, in 2 years or less cycle times. Also, I seem to remember that the more recent FS7 MkII announcement came as a bit of a surprise to many...

Personally, I think it'll be another year until we see a FS5 MkII (and my bank manager would prefer this!) but they are bound to respond to the recent Eva 1, plus (to a lesser extent) C200 releases sooner rather than later.

We'll know soon enough!

And then there is this, GH5 getting 10-bit 422 in 4K....

Maybe there was more to my tweet then first met the eye

Panasonic is killing it! They really aren't holding back anything and which bodes well for what they will do in future with the EVA1.

When I compare this with the seemingly worthless update Canon has planned for the C200 it's hard not to laugh. I wasn't even thinking about the GH5 but now I think I may pick one up.

I wouldn't put it past Canon doing that one day....

They already did, a few years ago. They put out a press release touting a new product Introduction as "the most important in our history" (or something like that). The internet melted down in utter uproar over the incredible, heart stopping amazing cinema.camera that Canon was sure to introduce. And in the end it turned out to be a copier.

I had to laugh a few weeks ago when Sony updated the F5/55 and the Fs5 with lovely new firmware and all the FS7 got was a user guide with some dodgy method of achieving exposure.

Anyway, Sony do have an announcement coming. A very big one. A new, full-frame sensor camera to replace the F65. Not sure I'll have the coin for that...

Who said it was going to replace the F65 ???
It might be an addition to the range... so then the big question is exactly where is it going to be priced?

Yes, good point. And I agree, I don't think it will be an F65mkII, but something completely new, F66, F75 F77...

Sony linked from their official Twitter account to the article in Film and Digital Times article linked below. In the article John Fauer says the new camera isn't a replacement for the F55 or the F65 and specifically says this camera is 'compatible with current and planned accessories for F55 cameras" so Sony apparently sees this camera coexisting with the F55 for some time. The article doesn't mention the F5 at all which makes me curious about its future in Sony's lineup.

My guess is this new camera is slotted below the F65 which is due for an update that hopefully reduces its size substantially, and provides internal raw along with a sensor update. Ang Lee had generally favorable things to say about his experience shooting "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" with the F65 but I remember him saying something about wishing the camera was smaller and I doubt he is alone in that wish. I think Sony still wants or needs to have an 8K camera to be competitive in Japan where they are already broadcasting some content at that resolution and as a country are planning for the 2020 Olympics where 8K will be a big deal. This new camera doesn't meet that spec so I am thinking it will be something like an F55 MK II or an F60. The former case isn't unprecedented since the FS7 and FS7 MK II have been on the market together for some time.

Sony's tweet calls this new camera the next generation of CineAlta so maybe there may be more cameras coming. Of course we will all know more in a few days.

This reminds of an "Alice" episode that CBS announced as the "most important television event of the year" in 1983.

It was about Vera's wedding.

Which doesn't even compare to Luke and Laura's wedding (of 1981). Or Tiny Tim & Miss Vicky wedding. But I digress.

So basically what you're saying, is Sony will be announcing a Panasonic camera that can also do photocopies.
Only to an external copier via micro HDMI.

Jon estimates the pixel count to be ~ 30 MPX. I suspect it's going to be either 26.4 for the 444 RGB 4K or 33.2 for 4:2:0 8K.

The side story here is the F65 sensor, which deserves a better camera.

... Not that I think the world needs more reality TV.
I believe that Kim Kardashian behind is getting a spinoff show of its own. In the opening episode, it will be eclipsing the sun.

True! I quite forgot about that.

Ah Canon, a parody of itself!
