FS5: Big news around the FS5 this week

Hope you're right! I'd certainly be happy to pay for that upgrade to my FS5, assuming it is a firmware option and not via an FS5 MkII.

I hope it's an FS5 Mark II, someone pointed out that it could be internal RAW recording or XAVC-i codec update. If Sony makes an FS5 Mark II with RAW capabilities without external recorder, they will sell them like hotcakes.

I really hope it is new camera with cool features like a locking E-mount and 12G HDSDI but even if it isn't a Mark II update there are some amazing things I think Sony might be able to do to with a firmware update.

1) Offer at least 10 Bit XAVC-L internal recording or maybe even XAVC-I.

2) I would be OK with Sony saving internal RAW for the FS7 update. Just allow Convergent Design and Atomos to record Sony's Compressed RAW over HD-SDI with the FS5 instead of requiring the use of uncompressed CinemaDNG. This would be a game changer and would dramatically increase the ecosystem for Sony FS RAW. I am pretty sure this wouldn't hurt R5 sales since almost everyone who shoots with the FS5 uses a third party recorder instead. Who knows, we might even be able to get support for Sony FS RAW in more NLEs.

3) Increase the bit rate of the FS Sony Raw to 14 or 16 bits. The Canon C200 12 bit log encoding for RAW is more efficient the Sony's 12 bit linear encoding and this would make the FS RAW more competitive.

Please please please just let me shoot a decent log file in 4k. 4k 10-bit 422 would be the best news I could imagine. Watch out, Netflix...here I come!!

I agree with your points Gary. Somehow earned myself a negative vote total ? so can't up-vote you. :)

I wonder how much Sony is willing to upgrade the FS7/II firmware and features before its replacement comes along? I could see Sony bringing out a replacement for the FS7's (or abandoning support) anywhere from late 2017 up to sometime in fall 2018.

Of course I'd love to see the FS7's stick around a while and get a bump to its specs. Like in its raw output bit-rate (making it worth using), or a bump up to 480mb/s in 4K X-AVC I (like the F5/55), but apart from that-- and perhaps the semi-useful BT2020 gamut update for the FS7-- there isn't much the camera is lacking, IMHO.

I don't think Sony has a reputation for "abandoning support". Do they? Until I bought my first Sony camera, the FDR-AX100, I mostly bought Canon video cameras and dSLRs. Now I have 2 FDR-AX100s, 2 FDR-AX53s, 5 FDR-X3000s, and the FS7. So, a bit invested. I have been impressed with the way Sony has stood behind the FS700. Could be that they sold a large number of those cameras and that of course would play into their decision to continue development of it. With the FS7, I'd expect the same type of long-term support.

Being a relatively new owner, it would suck to hear about the MK II coming out soon. On the flip side, I fully expected it since the mail in rebates and instant rebates are all happening in succession. Usually this is a clear indicator of new hardware coming soon.

Regarding Sony abandoning support, I have more experience with their photo cameras than their professional video cameras. I think Sony is getting better with cameras, but they've unfortunately left some pro/semi-pro models with few (or no) updates.

You'd have a better idea than I would with video cameras. The FS700 "4K compatible" fiasco was a little hard to stomach since Sony's eventual two part ~$7K solution (more with media) really lacked foresight. What makes me wonder about the FS7 is that it lacks the internal hardware to correct 4K video for Sony's own lens distortion. (Their a6300/a6500 and FS5 can correct 4K video.) And only the FS7 II got the in-camera BT2020 color space as well. I know Sony can't see into the future, and they've been way ahead of the curve compared to everyone else with the FS7, so I don't want to complain.

Amen, I'd be happy with 10 bit 4k and 60p to the card for right now.

With two days to go, I'll make a guess. X-OCN internal recording to the QXD cards ... if this is MKIII.
