Big File Size

I am shooting a doc on the HMC and am finding it hard to manage all of the footage. Two or so hours of footage wind up being 150+GB of QT files. I am having to buy HDD's over and over to back-up the footage.

Any suggestions on how to manage the size of these files. BTW, I am cutting on FCP6. Would there be a difference if I upgraded to FCP7?

Thanks,

Jack

What are you converting the footage to? Sounds like ProResHQ. Changing to FCP7 isn't going to make things any better. Well, maybe it will... you could transcode to ProResLT and cut the movie in that. Then consolidate and re-import from the masters again to get full ProResHQ, but on WAY less material.

Or you could go buy an XSan!

This stuff is no joke brother. Doing big time HD projects requires big iron.

you should only archive your original raw .mts files.

the transcoded files only live temporarily on your scratch disk while you're editing the project.

do yourself a favor and get a couple of 1Tb hdds for less than $100 each.

Perrone is so right, HD is major league. there are certain hardware requirements that are much different than working with SD.

2hrs no real problem, most of my weddings are around 150gb of HQ space. Get into at least two 1tb internal hard drives. I keep ten or so in progress on 2tb space. Archive the raw .mts and the project files as averan suggests and it's no big deal.

Pro Res LT actually holds up pretty well so you can save space using that. You can see a slight difference compared to normal Pro Res on a still frame, but not when the video is actually playing.

Another way to save a lot of space is to shoot 720p at 24/25/30. It also transcodes much quicker than 50/60p and 1080 footage.
