There's no real way to know unless you either go in person or tell the guy to look at the box. The serial is printed right on the side of the box, so you don't need to open it. Quite a few ppl had good luck with J and R, but there are no guarantees. At this point, maybe buy one used on eBay, ask the seller for the serial number, which for a used camera is de riguer anyway.
