Beware buying lenses from Amazon!

After much internal struggle I said screw it and ordered the 70-200 2.8 II (I'm a sucker for a $200 rebate)

Amazon had 4 in stock, so I ordered one. I've got Prime so I expected it by Friday.

After placing the order, it says "Shipping Soon" and expected delivery was 11/16, 6 days away (ok 4 business days).

I was like WTF? So I got on the chat, and they had no explanation why something in stock would not ship for 2 days. So I said fine cancel the order. They couldn't!

So I had a supervisor called me. The guy tells me that because it's an expensive item it takes them extra time to package it. I looked up the 7D with lens and it said I could get it tomorrow if I ordered it in the next 7 hours and chose 1 day shipping... so that's BS. The final answer was--even though I placed the order 30 minutes ago, and even though we're not going to ship it for 2 days, we can't change the shipping to overnight, and we can't cancel it. They already charged my card, which is ILLEGAL since they aren't shipping it for 2 days.

So I guess if I don't get a tracking number by the end of the day I'll dispute the charge with my CC and refuse anything that comes. I just can't believe they could have such poor customer service. and I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon.

I guess that's what I get for not using B&H or Adorama.

I wouldn't be surprised if, due to the price of the item, they lied about it being in stock and only ordered it from their supplier after you placed the order...that would explain why they wouldn't let you cancel it.

Same experience with Amazon

Same experience with Amazon

Same thing. They will say that shipping timeframe applies after it is sent. So if you buy something on the 10th and get two days shipping, they claim that if it is shipped on the 14th, it will be there by the 16th. So what about the 4 days in between???

Watch out when you get from Amazon if you need it in a hurry. Sometimes their price is lower, but not always worth it.

BH Photo on the other hand is always prompt. I have never experienced issues with BH Photo.

Sometimes we in Australia have to wait for two weeks or more for items posted from B&H, count yourself lucky.

What can I say... I've got no patience! They pulled their head out and it's supposed to be delivered tomorrow... hopefully they didn't drop kick it before they boxed it up!

Of course I bet UPS won't show up until 6:30pm. That's just how it goes.

I see you're in California noworries, so if you're near by Glendale feel free to stop by us if you need anything in the future. Because when we say we have it in stock (which we do have a few of the 70-200 IS II in), you can have it in you're hands in about two minutes

I just bought two items, and can compare Amazon and B&H. I bought a Panasonic DMC-LX5 camera on Amazon. And I bought a spare original battery for the LX5 from B&H ($49.95).

Amazon: Ordered November 4. Shipped November 8. Delivered November 10.

B&H: Ordered November 4. Shipped November 5. Delivered November 10.

Bottom line: both ordered the same day, shipped on drastically different days - Amazon took forever, 4 full days during which I could not cancel the order (which I was fine with - it said "order is being prepared and cannot be cancelled"), but... both delivered on the exact same day. I'm in Los Angeles, CA. I say that's a wash. I was impressed with the speed of order handling with B&H, less impressed with their shipper. As to Amazon - I've been buying there for 10 years now, tens upon tens of thousands of $, and I've had 99% good experiences. I'll certainly continue buying from both B&H and Amazon. And yes, I bought lenses from Amazon - no problems at all.

I have bought tons of stuff from Amazon.com. Including lenses. Whenever I have needed customer service, either from them or a third party Amazon store, it has always worked out well in the end.

B&H is good too though. Really, both merchants are top tier vendors in my book.

All's well that ends well. The UPS man came walking up just now... I greeted him on the porch. Rather then hand me the boxes he bends over to set them down and then let's go about 6" from the ground. I couldn't help but cringe, but I'm sure of all the drops that box has seen since it left Canon that was probably the smallest.

Just put it on my 7D... now going to have to go shoot with it!
