Best Wireless Lav Mic?

Audio sticky says it all: Go cheap and you'll pay later. I wouldn't consider anything less than the Sennheiser G3. I shoot with 2 Lectrosonic's and thanks to the FCC's spectrum vision, plan to replace the 700 Mhz unit with a G3.

The embarrassment potential of a wireless mic is inversely related to its cost. I was a very poor soul years ago when I started out, and the hairballs I got from my sub-$200 wireless mics took years off my life. I understand about being on a budget, but if there is any way to finagle something decent, do it.

I've tried some cheap systems and didn't like any. My Sennheiser G2/G3 works everytime and sounds decent. Don't get anything of lesser quality.

Of course it's a buck 50 more than the OP's budget.
$200 is a good starting point for a Lav mic to use with a wireless system, but not for a system.

Leaned my lesson with cheap wireless mics. Do not go that route.

Monday, a local hotel used four cheap lavs for a presentation with a feed to my cam out its mixer via XLR. Not a good experience there

A Sennheiser G2 costs about $80 for four days from Lens Rentals with shipping included. That's both cheaper than $200 and saves a lot when you consider how much you would lose when people hear the audio quality you get from substandard equipment.

Years using Tram TR-50s with Senn G3 xmitters. Warmer and more gain than the incl Senn mic...and built to last AND made in USA.

I've decided to go with the Senn G3 . Everyone here is right, you don't wanna regret lost audio or poor quality down the road.

I'll have to splurge and put it on a card, but i want quality ....thats why i went for the AF

Thanks Everybody!!!!!

Cheers

But, you need to be very careful with the G2's as to the frequency block that they support.
Many are in the "Google phone" block and you will have many problems with cut-out,
squelches and static if you're in that frequency range. Not worth it (IMHO).

If you go with a G3, you're pretty much guaranteed a clean FCC block and they come in three
band blocks.

Personally, I prefer the Lectro's .. but they are considerably more expensive ..
G3's are quality units though.

Funny thing is great audio makes even iffy picture seem much better. Nothing 'looks' worse than bad-sounding audio. I've learned this lesson over and over again- nail the sound and the picture will fall into place. Vice versa is not the case...

Lol.... yeah, Noah's nailed it. I used to have (fun) debates about audio vs video with an audio engineer I used to work with. His fav argument: "If you have audio + video, and the video drops out, you get - radio. If you have audio + video, and the audio drops, you get .... nothing".
