Best Wide (14mm ish) to Match Canon FD Set

well, i DO have the nice Lumix/Laica 14-50 2.8-3.5 :)
but i was afraid to use it along with the FD's because of the "sharp video" look.
but if you say it's breeze to fix in post, then it's a pretty fast and good lens (while also having stabilizer)

If you do lots of grading, you can match whatever to an FD, but if you just colour correct, keeping things natural, most modern lenses are too contrasty, which means upping the FD's contrast, as it's near impossible to remove contrast nicely. They are not really sharper - well, the 14mm Lumix is not sharper than the 24/2, 35/2, 50/2 etc FD, but is sharper than the 14mm FD for sure, but really it's the low contrast of the FD that makes them so nice. I don't find them soft, but organic and pleasant, unlike Lumix, which I often find digital looking. Removing all sharpening (-2) always helps, of course.

the opposite

the opposite

I did a try to do the opposite of you need to do.

I did a pos-production grading to match vintage lenses to the panasonic 14-42mm look

Maybe you can do the opposite settings on post-production to match the Panasonic lens to the vintage lens look

the tutorial is here: http://vimeo.com/34423217

in computer try applying these filters in the panasonic lens:

a very little blur (a fraction decimal amount maybe)
gamma correction 9 (from the default 10)
brightness 3 (from the default 0)
contrast -2 (from the default 0)

also you can try the three way color correction filter (there are sliders to adjust top white, bottom black and midtones) in master channel

thanks.
well, as Lucas said, the main problem is to flatten the contrast. i hope that could be decently done somehow.
(other option is to shoot the FD's with a bit MORE contrast- but that's missing the whole point).

huh, 2000$ for 14mm?
and also, it'll actually be 28mm. the Olly 14-50 is true 14mm angle, no?

No, if you compare to full frame all 14mm lenses will be 28mm. All 14mm are the same field of view, what changes the field of view is the sensor size.

thanks.

14mm is 14mm is 14mm. Any 14mm lens will look the same as any other 14mm lens in terms of angle of view, Lumix or SLR or medium format. Forget "2x crop factor" - it is a nonsense. A smaller frame will not "make your 14mm SLR lens a 28mm" EVER! It will crop into the frame of what an SLR would see with the same lens, as the sensor is smaller, leaving an angle of view similar to that of a 28mm lens. Get it?

got it sir, yes sir!!!
;)

so this 14-50mm is actually 'cut through' to 28-100mm VIEW in m4/3 format, right?

That sounds like you've got it. The idea that it is "really a 28mm - 100" only makes sense if you have been using a 35mm SLR for years and years and got really used to the angles of particular lenses so much that you can't think differently about them. In reality, 14-50 has the same dof characteristics on any camera. Crop factor for video should in no way be based on the 35mm SLR standard, as it's irrelevant anyway for video.
