What is the best way to transfer to 2 ext. HDD at the same time?

Do I need an expensive ext. RAID system?

Can I just connect 2 ext. HDD in 2 seperate USB cases and copy parallel to both of them at the same speed as to one?
Can this be done with a software RAID system?

You don't want to copy to two USB drives at the same time because it'll mean sharing the USB bus' bandwidth. It'll probably take twice as long as copying to just one drive.

The best way is to copy to one external USB drive and then simultaneously to one external firewire drive. That way each drive is taking full advantage of its bus speed.

I've copied P2 cards to two external drives using this method, and it takes barely any longer to execute than it would to copy to just one drive.
