Best Way to Preview Before Editing

Hey guys,
I am shooting a short and have about 5 days of shooting done with about 2 left to go. When it comes time to start editing I don't want to export everything into ProRes right out of the shoot... yes, I will use prores for my edits but I first want to watch everything and only export the clips I plan to use...
My computer cannot keep up with the .mov files very well... is there something else I can use with mpeg that I could mess around with in FCP before going to the full ProRes???

I've found that half-res or even SD files in mjpeg make nice proxies. I am PC based, but this is an old quicktime staple and should be blisteringly quick on any modern Mac.

That's what I'm hoping for from the Asus O!Play.

It's about $100 stand alone box that will output 1080p clips straight off of a portable hard drive, you can plug it right into your HDMI monitor without ever having to fire up your computer. I'm hoping someone has one they can test out to make sure it works with the 7d. It says it plays .h264, but you never know til you try it out.

> $100? How about you just buy a $7 hdmi to hdmi mini cable and

You missed where the OP said they were getting done with 5 days worth of shooting. Most likely everything is backed up on portable HDs, not on CF cards.

And yes, I do have one of those mini HDMI cables - Monoprice rules.

Yeah, easy like a snap of a finger.

Especially if you have hours of footage... Reminds me of when people told me how it was easy to install linux on a laptop.

I just went to frys and bought an Oplay. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm Back.

It's good. Easy-breezy. Just plugged it in to my Maxtor and my plasma, navigated to the folder and DAMN it looks good. 7D native files - crisp clear and no stuttering. 10 second boot up as well. No computer necessary. Nice. This is the way of the future. Looks better than the transcode to BR...

anything to this? is it all self explanatory? just hdmi from the box to the tv and then put the ext. hard drive to it with usb and watch?

I dont mean to hijack here but I figure I ask insted of creating a new post, but everyone shooting with the 7d that uses FCP has to use compressor to edit in prores Lt? is that the norm here?

Yup, that's it. You can navigate the folder structure with the remote control. It's cool.

Ok this sounds snap simple. Question when using this device is it possible to tell if when projected on the big screen that it will look just as good as my hd tv screen, or will the image change as it gets bigger and bigger on the Big screen?
1080/ 24p no down conversion.

Hmm,

In my experience, a mid level projector will be more likely to cover up flaws - making the image look better.

Silverado Systems is near by and they have a 4k projection room. I'll bring it by and see how it looks.
