Best way to mount the SmallHD DP1 LCD monitor to my HPX170?

Hey everyone. What is the best way to mount a DP1 9" LCD monitor to my HPX170? I've read online that mounting to the hot shoe is a bad idea. Anyone know of some reliable articulating arms and clamps and where to order them online? And Zacuto is out of the question because I can't afford to pay that much. Thanks.

that monitor is way too big and awkward to mount ON the camera. youre gonna need a baseplate, rails, arm situation.

Yeah, I figured I need a clamp and articulating arm but, which one do you guys advise me to get? I'm looking for a setup that is $100 or less. Any suggestions?

I'm using a cinearm, which works great for me. I'm not sure I'd mount a monitor on a flex arm, btw, but I can't say I've seen one of those in person. It just seems risky to me.

Would these two items combined work well for clamping the DP1 9" LCD monitor to either my tripod or the handle of the HPX170?

that arm isnt strong enough to hold the monitor in place while the camera is in motion. it would bob and weave with you and that rig would likely put undue stress on your camera handle. i have a dp1 and its just about too big to use on-camera without a baseplate and rods+arm situation. there are cheaper solutions out there than zacuto, but none will be in the $100 range. zacuto does however make a little insert for the hvx200 (maybe for the hvx170 as well???) that braces the area under the cameras handle, allowing you to add heavier things like a monitor to the cameras built in shoe. you might look into that...

cavision makes some stuff that might get you started as well...

Thanks, WGZN. I have a rails system I bought to use whenever I buy a 35mm DOF adapter. How would you go about attaching the DP1 field monitor to a rails system?

well, im a zacuto guy. so i used a combination of a couple of their mounts and articulating arms. (specifically the zamerican large arm, z-mount and zicro - about $450 total) and that will mount to any 15mm rod system. there are cheaper wasy to go about it - but i dont know how cheap and if the end results would be as acceptable...

How heavy is it? I mount my 7" using the mounting hole on the handle. All depends ion the weight of the screen and the weight of the cords hanging off it.

Also whether you can still balance the setup on the tripod. I know many manfrotto heads don't give you a heck of a lot of positioning space for balancing.

My 7" is pretty light. not sure about the DP1.

and this all depends. are you carrying the camera around or will it be mounted on a tripod?

I'm using the DP1 connected to a swivel adapter mounted to the hot shoe of my HVX200A. Seems to work well when I'm shooting from a tripod. I would not attempt to run and gun with this setup, but I have no problem balancing my tripod or with the monitor swinging around.
