Best Way To Import 7D Footage ".mov" Files?

but on the other hand, i have tried taking some videos and they dont seem to be as good as the ones on vimeo...hmmm...even the tests on there...

But there could be any number of reasons for that. e.g. shooting technique, lighting, editing, grading, compression settings for upload , etc... etc...

I just want to point out that I've tried the mpegstreamclip with the avid codec and I'm going to spend the money and purchase Neo Scene by Cineform. I've downloaded the trial version and I'm very impressed with the time of transcoding, and the quality results vs. the free route with mpegstreamclip. Don't get me wrong though, Free is Free, however, I'm just not that cheap and I'm a bit of a pixel pusher.

You do realize that DNxHD is what you see on the big screen from any number of Hollywood films right? And that at 10bit and 185 or 220 is superior to Cineform...

Not to knock Cineform, and it has it's place. I'm just saying...

i have all my files converted to quicktime .mov files with avid DNxHD codec, when i line the files up in premiere, i can only preview for a few minutes, and then all my effects and video wont play and everything is freezing?

computer specs:

core i7 920 8 mb cache clocked @ 3.4ghz
gigabyte ud5 motherboard tripple channel memory
3 x 1 gb ddr3 clocked @ 1.7 ghz
SLI 2 x 8800GT
Western digital caviar black 7200 rpms, 32 mb cache
windows 7

any suggestions?

unstable oc ? bad memory ? oveheating? Try resetting everything to stock

check your temps, run some stability tests (e.g. linx, prime95, occt) , check memory integrity (e.g. memtest 86+)

with all the effects, you'd need to render the preview... I don't think Premiere would let you preview the effects at realtime

Are you crashing (as in unresponsive have to reboot) or is it just "slow?" Is it ok after your render that section?

ie. Try to describe what you mean by "freezing" a bit better. "Freezing" implies frozen as in stuck, can't do anything.

If you're freezing , it's likely hardware / heat/ oc related issues. If it's slow, it's likely just the amount of layers/effects that you have

like sometimes i just cant preview it anymore, sometimes the playback is slow and the the picture will stop moving in the preview window, but the time slider is still playing...

actual crashes or frozen to have to reboot, doesnt really happen, after the file is rendered it plays back at normal speed...

so that's slow from effects etc... that's normal

some stacked effects are very cpu heavy and you will never get realtime playback, even on a sd proxy workflow or something like DV

even with no effects, just playing the video in premiere will chop and eventually stop showing video...

quicktime (.mov wrapped) videos are typically slower on PC .

You could try cineform, which will be a lot smoother , or try a proxy workflow (edit in lower resolution, then swap for final render)

It might also have something to do with your setup (1 drive for os, programs, swap file, scratch disk and videos is a bad idea - ideally you would separate all , if not most of them)

after i use cineform, or mpegstreamclip with avid codec, i bring into premiere......when i am done editing, what format is the best to export?

mpeg2 looks crappy and h.264 is playing slow on my machine....but yet all the mp4 files i downloaded play just fine...its weird...

Best for what? For looking at on a PC? Best for Youtube? Best for broadcast, best for DVD/BluRay...

You need to tell us what you are going to do with the video before anyone can tell you what is "best".

well i can play all vimeo h.264 mp4 files but when i encode them, they are choppy....its kinda weird...

whats the best for upload to vimeo or youtube, both sites offer 1080p...

and whats the best for dvd to retain as much quality as possible?

Best way to import .mov files from a 7D and edit them natively? Use Edius Neo 2.5 or Edius 5.5 which will be released real soon (April).

For Premiere CS? Wait for CS5 which *might* have the Mercury engine... then pay for the upgrade and then upgrade your video card with at least a GeForce GTX 285 (around $330)...
So... Spend at least a grand to do it in Premiere on ONE PC, or spend $250 for Neo 2.5 and edit it in RT on a laptop or dual/quad/i7 desktop.
