T2i Best way to get noise free images in dark scenes

Personally, even for low-key nighttime scenes, I prefer not to crush my blacks on initial recording. Use light, as much of it as you can afford. A exterior nighttime scene in a Hollywood movie could easily have 18K HMIs on scaffolding running.

I'ts about shaping and controlling the ratio of light. Get enough light in the scene, and you can use a low ISO, and still stop down. But really, even then, don't presume to make the picture as dark as you want it in the final film in camera. If you can, shoot brighter, since you won't clip the highlights here - and then crush your blacks to taste in post.

I frequently have Directors and Producers look at field monitors and tell me to close the iris down and make the picture darker. But if I indulge them, there won't be as much information to manipulate in post.

Very cool trick. I did not know that, so thank you VERY much for teaching me!!

This should be sticky

Hey guys, this is a really helpful post. I wasn't able to find another one specifically about getting rid of video noise before and while shooting. I know about Neat Video and its magic, but I am currently learning how to get rid of noise while shooting video. I use a 7D and when I open my aperture much, I get a very shallow depth of field and focusing becomes a challenge to capture sharp moving subjects.

Did anybody out there found another online resource about this specific topic? Threads, videos, websites?

Anyone?

Thanks

...what's wrong with this one? Lots of light on your subjects and background, stop down, and then darken the image to your liking in post.

and remember lighting ratios. So in the raw scene it will all be lit well...but one side will be lit more than the other side of say example someones face. But after grading and crushing the darker areas....the darker side of the lit face can be crushed into darkness while leaving the more lit side with light. So now ur image is nice and noise free
