best way to 16x9

Re: best way to 16x9

Only if the aperture/zoom/distance combination is appropriate. If you're not using the right aperture for the zoom/distance combination, then there's no way that any method will deliver proper focus with the adapter.

Not even looking through the viewfinder?

One other question. What does letterbox look like on a 16:9 TV?

Re: best way to 16x9

So is it just best to shoot in letterbox even if the use will be 4:3? I was watching a doc on PBS last night and I notice the black lines at the top and bottom. Not very much really. It was that "Do you Speak American". Does anyone know what that was shoot with? Camera? Was that what letterbox looks like on a normal 4:3 TV?

Also if you would hope for something to go to film and don't have a AA what should you do? Go letterbox or 4:3 and let it get fix in post later?

I'm just about 99% decided on the DVX...I just want to make sure I can work around the 16:9 issue.

If you want 4:3 don't use in cam letterbox. If you want the widescreen look in 4:3, use letterbox. Or did I miss the point of your question and the previous answer(s) posted?

Yes, you can letterbox in post (Vegas at least) but unless you use some sort of mask on your monitor while shooting you may be cropping out material you do not want to lose when you apply letterboxing. Either way the resolution will be the same.
One advantage to shooting 4:3 and letterboxing in post, as I see it, would be that you could decide not to letterbox. Once letterboxed in camera there is no way I know of to retrieve what's 'behind bars'.

If the aperture is not appropriate, you will not be able to get proper focus. At all.

One other question. What does letterbox look like on a 16:9 TV?
Terrible. You either end up with stretched footage where everyone's short and fat, with letterbox bars on top and bottom (even though it's on a 16x9 TV), OR you have your TV set to expand (sort of like pan 'n' scan) so the TV will automatically cut off the letterbox bars, but that means the footage will be digitally stretched and might look soft and out of focus. But, each TV is different, so you can try it... but letterbox is not designed for use on a 16x9 TV. It's designed for use on 4x3 TV's.

If you want to have it have the look of widescreen, but display on a 4x3 TV, then yes, letterbox is appropriate.

Depends on your post solution. If you're letting a professional film transfer house like DVFILM.COM do the up-rezzing, then yes I'd vote for either letterbox or 4x3, and let the film transfer house do the conversion.

4x3 is not 16x9. 16x9 is not 4x3. Determine what's important to you, and that'll help you pick which way to go.

Re: best way to 16x9

wonder what does Pana say about this?

what does Panasonic mean anyway?

pan = left and right?

sonic= speed of sound, blue hedgehog from SEGA?

Re: best way to 16x9

I think that the best way to achieve the widescreen look for regular TV or widescreen is to shoot in squeeze mode and then burn a dvd.
That way you will have the "look" for 4:3 tv's as well as widescreen tv's.

Re: best way to 16x9

Anybody shoot in Squeeze than use FCP for post Compressor for export and than DVDSP3 for DVD output?

Looking for info on the process and the end results for my recent project shot using squeeze?

Re: best way to 16x9

What are the implications in all this for video projection (assuming no ana adapter)? I imagine most DVX projects will not go to 35mm but when projected for an audience will be done with a video projector.

Thanks

Re: best way to 16x9

In terms of which process will look better on the big screen? It will pretty much be the same as if you were going to film. Now if you are projecting a DVD... that's harder to say. Definitely project from a laptop or something similar so you can use a high res version!

Re: best way to 16x9

Yea, I was thinking more in terms of DVD. I see your point about the laptop but in distribution to a festival, for example, it would have to be projected from DVD.
