Hello,

I routinely shoot outdoor wedding ceremonies and I read that a good UV filter may help achieve better color/contrast. I am looking for a high quality 72mm UV filter for the 160A. Any recomendations???

As far as I know a UV filter influence on the picture is minimal to non existent. I use a UV filter for protection, would much rather for it to get a scratch than the camera lens itself. You might wanna get a good one like tiffen or b&w, had a cheap one that created nasty flares. With the tiffen UV filter I own the flares are much more subtle and pretty.

I'm in the camp of not using UV filters, especially on small chip cameras. The improvement in picture quality due to filtering UV is only very slight, and only in very specific situations. The only real advantage is in protecting the lens from scratches.

However, there are some downsides. Firstly, any extra glass, no matter how good, will increase flaring (at least to a very small amount). Secondly, the depth of field is so great on 1/3" cameras that the slightest mark on the filter will show as a distortion in the picture.

The better way to protect a lens is with a lens hood, and the 130/160/250 comes with a nice one.

I have not used a UV filter in at least 30 years and have never had any lens damage at all, on film, video and still cameras. I just do sensible things, like not touching the lens and using appropriate techniques in the very rare occasions I do need to clean the front element.

Thank you for the responses. After doing a little more research, I think I have decided to skip adding a UV filter. I am very careful to protect my equipment and I really only wanted it if it was going to improve the image quality. Thanks again.
