Hi jsauce,

You might want to put in a price limitation, if there is one. As you can see from the Sachtler, support can get expensive pretty quickly.

Look at the Libec LS-38M. The 7D is a little light on its own for the tilt to be counterbalanced properly, but with a little weight it works very well. Downsides: no adjustable drag or counterbalance. Upsides: true fluid head, very good professional motion. The automatic drag feels excellent.

I'd say it's your best choice for under $1000 outside of the used market. Avoid the Manfrotto 501/503 and lower end Vintens. The next step up from this is the $1500 to $2000 mark where you could look at Cartoni Focus, Miller DS10 or DS20, Sachtler FSB, Vinten Vision etc.

$640 on B&H with a great aluminum tripod and mid level spreaders.

Not sure on the 503, but I used to have a 501 tripod and it wasn't smooth and rather bulky. I was able to pick up a used LS55 libec piece and it works well. Using a sony ex1 and canon 7d on it.

I don't know if its operator error or what, but I have the 503hdv head and it definitely gives a little push back after pans and tilts. The only reason to not get it though, is if you're doing some serious work or telephoto moves that need to be smooth and subtle.

Was playing with a Sachtler head at an expo and it really did feel different at the end of moves. No reverse pressure, just glides right until the end of a move, even really slow.
