Just starting to get into video after photography. I mainly do protests and newsy stuff. What would the best steadying method be for the GH1 and my use of it?
The best way for you to steady the camera would be a shoulder mount. I would recommend the Express 35 mounts. They are on the cheaper side and of amazing quality.
I have a Run and Gun Trio mount that allows you to change the way you use it (with or without a shoulder mount)
Other tip about filming from still, keep the shutter at 50 at all time, this is not a variable in film unless you are doing some specific effect shots.
wide angles, slow movements, multiple points of contact, OIS (if possible with your lens). For a very very small rig, I use just the GH2 with a gorillapod: right hand to grip, eye to EVF, gorillapod lays up against my left forearm as left hand operates the lens, and tighten the camera strap in rifle-like fashion to get the whole push-pull steadying effect.
Also, know your horde. A mob of violent Islamists or disenfranchised luddites will be more averse to a large rig, whereas a teeming throng of anti-capitalist/thrillseeking/trendfishing malcontents will be drawn to signs of media attention. Even the burliest rig is impossible to steady while rocks and sticks are being hurled in your direction.
Only shoot at shutter=50 if you're in 24p mode (documentary or web use); in 60i or 720p mode (as you'd generally use for news footage), go for 60 or 125 instead.
Thanks for your help and info. About the express 35 mounts - I cant get them in the UK where I'm based. Do you know any more globally known brands?
Would a monopod be any good? I've seen some videographers using them at the stuff I've been to.
Thanks for the shooting info. I'm going to start with web for now. I also plan on hacking the gh1 to get 50 at 1080p just so I can play around with it.
