Best starter lens for AF-100

I'm trying to stay under a grand. Looking at these lenses:

Olympus 14-54 f/2.8-3.5 $500

Panasonic Lumix 14-140mm F4-F5.8 $ 700

Panasonic 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 OIS Four Thirds Lens $890

Feedback?

Thanks,
PDX

I have the 14-140 and Olympus 14-54 f/2.8-3.5

The 14-140 is good for a general outdoor lens. The faster 14-54 is a bit nicer to use IMO, not to mention a bit faster.

If you're looking for one lens, I would go with a zoom.

If you were going to buy one lens... Voigtlander 25mm .95. Only issue is that it's hard to find.

The Panasonic 12-50 2.5-3.3 is in the works.
Says who? Has there been an official announcement from the company?

As far as I know, the so-called 12-50 2.5-3.3 exists only in the mind of one rumor site... would love to hear if there is anything official whatsoever about such a product.

i love Bob's idea of getting a single prime! obviously it depends on what kind of work you are doing but i really like the idea of intimately getting to know a lens and a focal length.

thanks everyone,
I'll be doing a variety of work on it. I want a lens that I won't regret buying ...

leaning toward the Oly now, has good reviews, does anyone own one? the Panasonic seems to have more problems.

then i'll get a prime like the Voigtlander 25mm .95 when/if it's ever not back ordered

still open to suggestions!

I guess the 14-54 should cover your bases. I have the 14-35mm as my main lens (I know it´s over your budget) and had my first day on a new docu series I´m shooting yesterday. It worked really well, but being used to ENG cameras for this type of production I missed a bit more range a few times, but it was never a problem. SO I think the 14-54 is the way to go for you.
I would have normally bought the 35-100mm as my next lens in the kit, but I have to shoot quite often in small spaces on this production so I got the 7-14 Panny to cover my butt. It´s (to me) almost unusable at the wide end so I thought of getting the 9-18mm Olympus first.
I tried them in the shop, but the Oly had a lot of breathing and the PAnny hardly none

Personally...I would go with more money and buy the Zuiko 14-35 f2. I am wishing I had done that. Perfect lens kit IMHO:

- Voightlander 25mm 0.95
- Panasonic 20mm 1.7
- Zuiko 14-35 f2
- Zuiko 35-100 f2

Hey Barry,

Nothing official but there has been much chatter on various other forums besides the obvious m43 rumor site. I'm pretty confident that Panasonic will release such a lens, but until it's officially announced the Zuiko 14-35 is the only other game in town.

Hey Barry,

Nothing official but there has been much chatter on various other forums besides the obvious m43 rumor site.
But aren't they all getting that same idea, from that same initial rumor site?

Can anyone point to ANY source other than the original rumor?

I would love for such a lens to exist, but as far as I can tell it's no more legitimate than if I just said "hey, I think a 10-40 f/1.5 lens with Power OIS would be a great thing, maybe that's the other 'bright zoom' they were considering." And then having the rumor sites pick that up and repeat it ad nauseum until it becomes "truth".

That's why I keep asking -- WHY do people think this lens is coming? What evidence is there? Is there any evidence at all? I'd love to think that such a product is coming, but I just haven't seen one stitch of evidence anywhere.
