BEST Solution for External HD-SDI Monitoring on 5D/7D

Hi,

We have lots of nice Panasonic monitors and need a solution to get the on camera signal converted from HDMI to HD-SDI. I need a converter that handles the downres from HD to SD on the 5Dii. I have heard the balckmagic converter with the older firmware is the best option. What is the best way to mount and power this box? What are the downsides? Is ther an all in one cage solution that is a better bet?

Thanks!

I'm suprised as well, I'd think people would be all over this, but I guess I'll start it off. There are so many options to do this. Are you doing a shoulder mount? Primarily Tripod? Or Handheld? I've built all three to work with the Blackmagic, which yes, in my opinion is the best option with the firmware downgrade. So for the questions:

Which Panasonic Monitors? More Specifically what is the battery mount.
Most likely it'll be Anton Bauer or V-Mount, so your best option would be to go P-Tap out into a Black Magic Power Adapter from Switronix.

Mounting: that's completely dependent on the rig, I've seen people actually drill into their adapter and add a hot shoe. But for me, velcro works just fine.

Hi Loren,

We have BT-LH80WU 7.9" monitors with Anton Bauer batteries (plus panasonic 17" and 26" hdsdi monitors for off camera). Right now we shoot mostly sticks with just the camera, but we have a redrock captain stubling rig that we will be buying more parts like a baseplate and shoulder stock to add tripod capability to our rail system. I would not be opposed to buying a cage if it could work with our rails and follow focus etc and be used hand held, with additional shoulder rest or on tripod. Seems like a central power system to mount an Anton Bauer and power everything would be awesome. We have a ton of AB Dionic 90s from our hpx500 packages. Seems like if you had a cage that supported rails, could mount a monitor and the hdmi to hdsdi adapter and power everything that would be awesome!

Thanks a ton!

That's a great monitor you've got there sane, love the built in waveforms. Only thing is it's so darn heavy! Hope you've got a good articulating arm.

Now I can't remember, is there a P-Tap out of the rear mounted gold mount? If there's not, than the setup may be a little more intricate, and here's how I would do it:

I'd definitelly get the DSLR Platform that I believe you were referring to early, and it also might not be a bad idea to go with some 12" rods.

I'd than get a separate microPod to attach an Anton Bauer Gold Mount Plate (Or even QR-DSLR which gives you the ability to power your camera off the battery as well)
Because of the way the Redrock DSLR Platform is designed, you should be able to get this pretty well balanced on any tripod.

Than you have the cage option. This will work in a very similar way to the previous option if you do not have a P-tap out of the monitor. If there is though, then you can go with the ViewFactor Powered Cage This will yield roughly the same outcome, but require less cabling to the camera, and does make things more "central". We currently stock the non-powered versions, but I believe the powered ones are back orders.
