Best Slider (Linear tracking system)

Im pulling the trigger on the 7D and Im also looking at a good tripod based tracking system for cramped shots.

What are my options? Ive already looked at the Kessler Pocket Dolly and Cinevate Pegasus systems. The former looks more rugged and user friendly while the Pegasus seems more versitile.

What Im looking at is the price performance ratio and it would also be nice to be able to track in and out which the Pocket Dolly cant do (the pegasus can be reverse mounted I think)

what are you kids using?

The Pocket dolly can be used to push in and out, you just have to mount the QR plate sideway or use a tripod head. The dolly shots in my film "Thinking of You" were shot in this configuration.

The main thing I like about the Pegasus that the Kessler doesn't do is the 100mm bowl attachment, which is very nice for quickly attaching and removing tripod head. The Kessler can only flatmount the head which means you pretty much have to carry an extra tripod head with you. Although we're talking about $1400 for the Cinevate which is a pretty hefty premium just for this feature.

so if I pull the trigger on the Pocket Dolly the Hercules head is basically a mandatory item?

ZaZa Slider is DIY. But it'll only cost you $180 total or less. Supposedly, making it is ridiculously easy. I've heard that assembling it takes less time than ordering the parts.

Not really, I bought one along with the Pocket Dolly, sold it soon after. It's much easier and faster to just use a flat surface like a table or two apple boxes to support the dolly. I don't like the idea of putting it on a tripod, sooner or later you'll forget to tighten something and the whole thing will come crashing down.

Weight?

Weight?

What's the weight on the Indislider mini? If I got a 24" zaza would it be lighter?

I'm going backpacking, but would love to get some tracking shots of temples and jungles.

I have only used the Glidetrack but it works pretty well and I'm very happy with it. I've placed it on the ground, on top of a car (slightly uneven/rounded surface), on large rocks, etc. Of course, I've also used it with my tripod (Libec LS38-2A). I actually keep it attached to my tripod quick release plate so I can move it from my tripod to another surface in an instant. I also have a Manfrotto quick release plate on top of my Glidetrack, which allows me to quickly move my 5D from it to the Zacuto Rapid Fire.

All in all, I can go from Zacuto Rapid Fire, to completely handheld, to floor/surface mounted Glidetrack to tripod (either using glidetrack or having glidetrack locked down -- no movement) in a matter of seconds.

I would say that the only downside with the glidetrack is that it's kinda loud, meaning that I've occasionally picked up some sound from it in my audio capture (using H4n). Not sure how it compares to the other tracks. Would be curious to hear about the sound of the others.

indislider is made from 8020 track, i built my own i used a 41" track instead of the 24. At 41" its almost 10 lbs, and pretty long, not something id take backpacking, but at 24" i think y ou would be fine. Keep in mind though you either have to set it on the ground, or take a decently beefy tripod to be able to hold it.

Yeah, that's why i thought I would build my own using Igus stuff so I could configure my own leg system...I've seen one with a cut up gorilla pod. I can't afford to spend $$$ on a carbon fiber tripod right now and nothing else is really light enough. Anybody have a Zazaslider?

I use the Proaim slider with my HMC150 and T2i, I got it shipped next day off of eBay for $260, the only downside with it that I have found is that you don't want to use the supplied screw for mounting it to your tripod plate as it isn't long enough to thread securely - an $0.25 upgrade at Home Depot fixes that.

But other than that it is super smooth, you just push and pull it and you've got smooth motion. Not the quietest rig out there either.

I have the indiSliderMini and it's light and quiet. I don't have any video online yet from using it, but I'm working on a project to post in the next week or so. For $130 shipped, it was definitely worth it.

LIBEC LS38 + Glidetrack

LIBEC LS38 + Glidetrack

Hi,

How do you attach the Glidetrack to the Libec LS 38?

I just received the Glidetrack but can't figure out how to take the bowl off the tripod head.

From personal experience, the glidetrack (any igus built sliders... pocket dolly and zaza included) is OK. If you need smooth consistent shots, you may want to go with something else like the DP slider. The bearing on the Igus built stuff sticks A LOT! You will find yourself re-aligning the bearings frequently as well. The advantage is, you could use it in water, it's super cheap to build, and you can make it any size you want. I still use my Igus built slider because that's all I have, but I'm hoping that I will soon be able to get a dp slider or build something similar. The sticky plastic bearing in the igus slider really ruin more footage than I would like.
