Best settings or patch for low light with lots of shadows?

Hi all,

I have had nothing but great, great results with lpowell's 100mbit patch on my new GH1. However, it's one weakness, or weakness of the codec in general, seems to be shadows. When I shoot dark areas, such as a lake at night, in heavily black areas like the sky I get great big blotches of purple-black compression artifacts in AVCHD. Should I be using an alternate patch?

From what I have read, LPowell has reported that shooting as MJPEG instead of AVCHD (he has various patches for high bit-rate MPEG) does give consistently higher bitrates and better results in low-light.

Try to use this GOP1 ( and 720 60p GOP2) settings. It will give you highest AVCHD bitrate. It is good for any low light shooting.
Native 24p/25p=Checked
Video Bitrate FHD/SH=119900000
Overall Bitrate=119900000
720p60 GOP Size=2
1080p24 GOP Size=1
Preset bitrate=1199
Preset bitrate 2=1199
Overall Bitrate 2=119900000
Constant for 1080p=3888000
Constant for 720p=466560
Video buffer=84.000.000

+1

But don't expect to got out and shoot detailed grass and outdoor scenes... It will not work. But for for low light. This is the best I've tested so far.

25p low light settings ?

These settings seem to be optimized for 24p. Any specific settings for 25p ?

I would like to also sing the praise of the GOP1 patch. It'll die every time with high-detailed, direct sunlight outdoor scenes, but interiors and other low-light settings it is perfect. Not sure about the 25p, though.

Which version of ptool are you using? I don't see boxes for bitrate2. Thanks.
Update-- Nevermind, I see it in the "Patchers for Testers Section"

I just tested this for an hour in a dimly lit room. I didn't see any difference in the shadow areas from the BP patch. But, it was not the same as a night time sky, with big areas.
