Best Settings for Skin Tones on 7D?

@xbourque - you're using the picture style for video or stills? If video could you elaborate on your findings as I've been using neutral for skin critical work.

I like portrait for everything, with sharpness and contrast all the way down. Occasionally, the color will be too saturated, but that's easy enough to dial down in post.

So far I've used marvel cine and neutral. This is great, new options, I'm looking forward to experimenting with the studio portrait I just downloaded. Thanks.

Hi guys,

Could you post a sample clips of your recommended setting so we can see how you use it?

For example, I've found the marvel cine destroys skin tones completely - perhaps if someone else has managed otherwise, they could post a clip and post grading settings for everyone to see the results.

Thanks :)

I found Marvel to be the worst skin tones of anything I've tried...in fact I dumped it because of that.

Edit: I will say I haven't been impressed by any user created picture styles so far. I think the Canon Studio Portrait really pops out the highlights and nuances in skin colors and if I'm focusing on skin tones I use that style.

So far I've marvel on product stuff only, ads.

Using neutral for skin, but I'm going to run a few tests with this one when i get a minute

They all look so similar don't they!

Hi Rahn,

Thank you for the test. It confirms what I thought before. I found Kodachrome in good lighting to render skin tones the best. This is only opinion but that's what I've been finding. Neutral works well, but I find the canon portrait to be too soft on the flesh, but that's maybe what some folks want. Kodachrome is my go to picture style.

I do have Kodacrome as my C2 setting (I know I said I didn't like any of the user made ones but I forgot that one) and I have Canon Twilight as my C3 setting (not for skin obviously)

Can someone attach Kodachrome to a post for everyone to download? Thanks in advance.

Also thanks for posting that test. From what I saw any subtle difference in red/magenta between them can easily be done in cc.
But what can't be regained is detail. I also noticed that the focus on the wall changed a little from shot to shot, or was that the codec?
It would be good to know if the detail change is the picture style or a slight focal length change.

.

here you go. I'm also attaching Kodak Portrait in case that helps. I have not yet had a chance during daylight hours, with a model to hand, to test any of these yet. (you get decent daylight about an hour a week here in London!) You generally want to change picture style for uncontrolled outdoor work.

I like the idea of portrait, but me personally will continue to stick with neutral, the more and more I shoot the better results I get, for me it's "if it ain't broken, why fix it" attitute, as long as the clients are happy I am happy, good info here though

I set the focus once and never changed the focal length (quick & dirty :D). I think the lens was at f/4, and I had the camera on a shoulder brace which isn't the most stable thing but the dof shouldn't have been shallow enough for the focus to go in and out.
