best settings for blue ray

hi all

I'm using Canon HF S10 which takes video in AVCHD 1080p 50i 24mbit/s and I would like to render my timeline from Vegas 9 Pro to DVDA project as Blue-ray disk.

I figured out that I need to use Sony AVC as type but which template to use is mystery for me. AVCHD 1920x1080 50i with audio or same resolution Blue-ray 16 mbit/s ? If these both are playable on blue-ray players? I'm for the best quality, space is not an issue.

What would your recommend?

Thanks in advance for you guidance.

best regards, Alex

There is no difference between AVCHD and Blu-ray when you are outputting AVC or M2TS file besides codec (AVC only for AVCHD; AVC, MPEG-2 or VC1 for Blu-ray) and bitrate (up to 18 Mbit/s for AVCHD on DVD, up to 24 Mbit/s for AVCHD on SDHC and up to 40 Mbit/s for Blu-ray).

Anything above 10 Mbit/s will look good.

AVCHD 1080p 50i? "p" means progressive and "i" means interlaced. Which are you shooting?

I have been going back and forth with SCS for the past two weeks trying to figure out how to render in Vegas for creating Blu-Rays in DVDA without recompressing. The DVDA help states that DVDA will accept any compliant footage from 3rd-party NLEs. But try creating compliant footage from Vegas! SCS latest reply is that they have submitted this "feature request" (ie, Vegas templates for creating compliant meda) to their developers.

These are the Blu-Ray compliant formats that DVDA says it will accept:

720x480 29.970 interlaced 4:3
720x480 29.970 interlaced 16:9
720x576 25 interlaced 4:3
720x576 25 interlaced 16:9
1280x720 29.970 interlaced 16:9
1280x720 50 interlaced 16:9
1280x720 24.000 interlaced 16:9
1280x720 23.976 interlaced 16:9
1440x1080 29.970 16:9
1440x1080 25 16:9
1440x1080 24.000 16:9
1440x1080 23.976 16:9
1920x1080 29.970 16:9
1920x1080 25 16:9
1920x1080 24.000 16:9
1920x1080 23.976 16:9

I believe the HF-S10 does not shoot 24p native, but rather wraps it in an interlaced stream (50i or 60i). So you need to remove pulldown to get to the 24p stream, then create your BluRay encode.

Vegas does not have the tools to remove pulldown. You'll need to do this outside Vegas. Once you bring the 24p footage into Vegas, you can edit as normal.

In regards to getting footage from Vegas to DVDA without recompressing, I gave up on that long ago. I just render a clean master from Vegas, and let DVDA do it's own compression. It's not as fast, but at least I get what I want. And in my experience, you'll never get anywhere NEAR 40Mbps encoding. I've never gotten anything over maybe 15-16 Mbps with the AVC codec in DVDA and maybe 24-28 Mbps with Mpeg2. It's really quite sad.

thanks all for feedback
sorry for confusing with P/I.
Since i'm in europe and on PAL my Canon HF-S10 shoots in 50i, in menu this option reads as 50i (standard), and there is one more - PF25. I use 50i.
U.S. NTSC version of S10 uses 60i.

In Vegas can edit in 50i and render as sony AVC, template :
[Use this setting to create a 1920x1080-50i AVCHD file.
Audio: 192 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, 24 Bit, Stereo, AC3
Video: 25 fps, 1920x1080 Upper field first, YUV, 16 Mbps
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000]
you see this one is with audio, so no separate ac3 render needed.

then I go to DVDA, new project -
set as blue ray, AVC 1920-1080-50i, AC-3 Stereo
and insert media. Press make dvd.
DVDA offers no recompression.

seems that I should not be loosing any quality as there is no recompress on any stage, am i right?
