Best Quality compressed workflow Avid/FCP?

I need some advice here. I want to shoot 4k RAW 30p (save for future stock footage) downconvert to edit and sell 1080p 30 fps on Blu-Ray.

I do not want to edit uncompressed 1080p.
Other than that- what codec would you edit in on the AVID? Is the highest rate DNxHD 10 bit the way to go?

On FCP - what codec would you use? Panasonic's codec or Sony or JPEG2000 or something else? (I wish I could edit Red Code from Red Raw for lossless.)

I will save everything to hard drives and store until holographic drives come out later in both the edited format and red raw.

I plan on buying a MAC quad 4, with blu-ray burner by April and edit in either Avid (DnxHD to me looks to be the best and most practical over the panasonic and Sony Codecs). - Please give your your arguements here or alternatives if better!

Or I plan to use FCP - but what codec for editing with lots of color correction do I use???? (again- anything but uncompressed) and why?

My current research seems to be either the Panasonic or Jpeg 2000 (which is better I believe?) Or is Sony's codec better since broadcast seems to like it more!?!

Thanks for the feedback.
What would be the ideal editing workflow (codecs) on both systems (Avid and FCP) (that is compressed) would you use and why?

What does Red Crew recommend for practical workflows?

With REDCODE playback being as simple as dropping a plugin file into the Quicktime plugins folder... there may be a chance of editing REDCODE RGB. We just don't know yet. A lot could change in the coming months, particularly with NAB just ahead.

For your situation, there should be no need to transcode when using FCP. I don't know enough about the Avid internals, but Quicktime is not native to it, although it will allow it's use. For Avid, you may end up DNXhD, but either way, it should be pretty smooth.

Hi Graeme

I know it is not ideal, but can I assume that I could start off shooting RedCode RGB and edit on my current G5 in FCP? Avoiding the need for the immediate purchase of an Intel mac the moment I get my camera.

That is quite possibly going to be the case, but we'll know more what it's going to be like when we've got further into the codec optimisation phase.

Graeme, any chance of getting Avid to support REDCODE by NAB? Can you at least e-mail those guys and send them a sample for them to get started?

I hope that also because of Ted's contacts at AJA, the Kona 3 will support HD-SDI output from REDCODE timelines. Although FCP will let you set any codec you like for a timeline, only certain codecs are supported for output by particular video cards. For example, I can edit in M-JPEG, but my Decklink HD Pro will not output that via SDI.

I have no doubt though that Red are already in contact with AJA and Blackmagic.

Here's another question for the techies -

I understand both FCP and Avid both handle HDV natively? But isn't Avid really transcoding and using their DNxHD?
