hello.
i am planning to shoot a docu. i would appreciate some help on how to get the best possible material for post production.
SO, i have xh a1 and hv20, and i am aiming at broadcasting on television and possibly cinema...
should i shoot 16:9 or 4:3?
but most important, should i shoot hdv or SD? i was thinking, what if i shoot in hdv and then capture in dv via the compressor inside my xha1 and hv20? would that give satisfying results for broadcast?
certainly it would make my editing process easier using FCS2.

what would you guys/girls recommend to achieve best possible images? any ideas? something important that i have forgotten to consider?

any comments would be immensly appreciated!

thanks in advance...

16:9 will ALWAYS gives a sharper picture on these two cameras because it uses a larger area of the chip. With that said, keep in mind that broadcast materials are frequently 4:3 and 16:9 footage will get cut off at the sides.

The downconvert function in camera certainly do not give the best SD picture. Shooting native SD will give you sharper SD. To properly downconvert HDV materials, shoot and edit in HDV, then import the HDV NLE project into an SD project and scale the video to fit. This "tricks" the NLE so that it will give great results when rendering out as SD.

thanx for those replies...
well, i will go for 16:9 then... but i am not sure about the hdv vs sd yet. do you think that there is so much to gain on the hdv considering the more uneasy editing?
what workflow do you use when editing hdv material? Is there any point using AIC or prores, and in what case should i use either of them? i havent quite understood this yet...
any other threads about this that you can recommend?

thanx again...
