Currently my favorite lens to shoot with is my 50mm 1.8 but im looking for a similar quality lens under 500 thats alittle wider. Would you guys suggests a 28mm, 24mm 0r 14mm??

I also have the kit 18-135 which is terrible and low light as well as my canon 10-22.

Shooting on the 7D

+1 on the Sig 30. At f/1.4, it's dependable in low light, if a bit soft. You could go the Nikon route, however, and save some dough.

Canon's 24mm, at f/2.8, offers good performance. But at that aperture why wouldn't you get a zoom?

I've read that Canon's 28mm f/1.8 is a decent performer with some fairly minor drawbacks. Its price is comparable to the Sigma. I chose the Sigma over the Canon based on its speed and its having garnered more positive reviews across various forums. But keep in mind that the Sig is not for full frame bodies.

After a shoot this weekend, low light is not a problem. Outside in the sun my F-Stop was always around 12+. Indoors you just go as wide as possible and 3.5 is really good as long as you have 1 or 2 lights.

If the original poster and the second poster do not want their kit lens, pleas feel free to post it on the market as I will gladly purchase it.

30mm would be good for a prime run and gun.

With that said, I had to video a lot of b-roll / landscapes / portraits in South America for a short film/psudo documentary that I'm working on.

I ended up mostly using a zoom Tamron 17-50, because if you're shooting true run-and-gun, often, you simply don't have the time to switch a lens out or else you'll miss the shoot. For example, you're shooting a portrait of a Incan man, he's not going to wait for you to switch out your lenses for the shot. You have about 1 minute to do it.

For more controlled situations, I switched to primes, but it would have been difficult to shoot docu-style using primes.

yeah i would htink a prime would be bad for run and gun, i would def take a versatile zoom, like the tamron 17-50mm gene suggesed.
