Best on camera light for XH A1

Wanted to get peoples' opinions regarding best on-camera light for A1. I would like to get a light with a decent amount of throw, I've heard LED's are a little bit lacking when it comes to this. The caveat is I don't want to drag around a huge battery. I need something with a dimmer that will give me options regarding amount of light I can put on the subject.

thanks,

Keith

Tungsten or HMI will have throw; LEDs just don't. They're great for soft closeup stuff (where tungsten is lousy) and they're fantastic for battery life, but not for reaching into the distance. My little Frezzi Mini-Fill can light up someone 30' away, but it needs a huge battery belt to drive it. LED lights can use on-camera batteries, but they'll only light up something to a matter of a few feet away; 10' would be really asking a lot from an LED light.

I have an NRG Varilight that I've seldom used and I'm willing to sell if you're interested

Its fully dimmable, and I have several glass filters for it including a daylight dichroic

it's hard not to like the frezzi minifill with the dimmer option. unfortunately, any light that kicks out significant wattage (15-20w+) will need a brick battery or belt to power it. i'm not aware of any on-camera light with a dimmer that can be powered by anything but a brick battery (or belt). 10w and under, you have more portable, self-contained options like the canon vl10i, powered by canon bp-style batteries. it's a hard light and has decent throw but no dimmer, and the battery tends to rattle around a bit when attached. you might have to bite the bullet and factor in a brick battery system to power the light you're looking for.

I think you guys are right, I might have to bite the bullet, especially if I want something with decent throw. Checked out the mini with brick yesterday, it's not too bad...
