Oh jeez, what have I gotten myself into?
I am DP on a documentary later this month which will utilize an AG-AC160 as "A" camera and Canon DSLRs as "B" and "C" cameras (hopefully mostly a one camera shoot but there will be a couple of times we will use all three). All footage will be professionally graded (most likely on Resolve, colorist not yet hired but hopefully in place before shooting). I'd like to set up picture profiles on all cameras to color match well after grading, ideally with the basic grading adjustments required being the same on the different cameras.
I'm only talking about color matching here. I'm aware of resolution differences and am not concerned about that, shot selection and composition will take that into account - I simply won't use the Canons when resolution is required.
My initial thought is to use the Technicolor CineStyle profile on the Canons, and set up a profile on the AC160 to match that. I'd found this http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...ings-for-250&p=2473639&viewfull=1#post2473639 HPX250 recommendation from Barry and was going to use it as a starting point, but I'm not sure how close the picture settings on the AC160 are to the HPX250.
Will I severely handicap the AC160 by trying to match it to the Canons? Would there be much gained by shooting the cameras with dissimilar profiles and making the colorist work harder grading the AC160 differently than the Canons? Should I shoot more for final look in the AC160 profile, and then grade the CineStyle Canon footage to match that?
What about matching profiles for a grade-free workflow, has anybody done that? It's a doc after all, who knows what curves I will be thrown on the day.
Unfortunately I have no choice in the camera selection, these decisions were made before I came aboard the project.
Any other suggestions? Does anyone have any first hand experience with matching these cameras? I'd really love to hear some BTDT stories but I'm open to any and all ideas, I know this forum has the answers I need
I don't yet have access to the AC160 (or Barry's book that I hope comes along with it), I will have one prep day immediately before beginning shooting but won't likely have time to test the entire post workflow.
