Best laptop for HV20? Mac or PC?

Hi,

A young friend of mine wants to be able to import and edit footage from an HV20 and is trying to decide on a PC or Mac laptop. Would a Dell laptop be sufficient ? Any model suggestions? How fast should it be and which software is the most user friendly? She's fairly proficient with FCP but a Mac might be stretching her back to school budget.

Thanks for any help!

I can't give you an exact model number, but I can give you some specs. I would recommend a multiple-core processor, the fastest internal HDD you can get (regardless of size), and a good large-capactiy external drive. Also, 2 GB of memory or more is needed. One thing not to overlook--the video card. Get a card made by ATI or nVidia with at least 256 MB of DDR. Don't get cards that are made by Intel--that's a card built into the motherboard, and it steals from the main RAM. Most Dell XPS and higher-end Latitudes have all these features.
As for NLE's, it's all a matter of personal opinion. I, personally, use Vegas. Most NLEs nowadays handle HDV.

Apple computers are way over priced IMO. You can buy a windows based laptop for $600- $700 that would do the job. Like this one.
