i know that the 20mm is smaller and have AF/AE, i also know that nikon is cheaper but i am just considering image quality here (especially considering that ETC might reduce Image quality).

if you have a suggestion for a fast prime lens between 35 and 50mm that can provide better IQ for video they are also welcome (under $400).

In general ETC will have a lower IQ but it really depends a lot on the lens. The 20mm does pretty well in good lighting. In low light ETC will increase noise. Here is a video I made to test the LCW Fader ND mark II but it also will show you 20mm vs 20mm + ETC if that helps:

Another option is the nikon 35mm 1.8G

I just bought it last week and have been very happy with it. Creamy bokeh, sharp and incredibly flare resistant. I will be posting a video of it maybe next week if I have the time.

The down side is if feels like a toy in your hands, its like a bic disposable pen......... but the IQ is one of the best that I have tested.
