Best HDMI monitor for 7D under 1000$ ???

i dont know, maybe its just me, I own the panny bt-lh80 and i use the HDfury to convert the hdmi to component.

anyway, i find that since the signal coming out of the 7d doesnt show full screen, an 8 inch monitor is not sufficient for critical focus.

for me, when i hook up my monitor, the video only shows in the center of the screen, as the output is 4:3 and the actualy video is letterboxed inside that. (is it only me that has this problem?)

I think something might be getting lost in the conversion, because when i plug the HDMI directly into a dell monitor, it displays full screen.

Firemountain- Does the image on the lilliput display full screen?

I have the lilliput model without hdmi inputs and going through the composite input, it's practically useless for anything other than framing.

Well, as i remember, at first when i was using the 5D, the image was shrunk, during live view and recording, and then on playback it was full screen.

But then there was a firm wear upgrade for the 5D that made the image full screen, it wasn't perfect because the image would be a little stretched out while recording, but during live view and playback it was regular.

I have used the monitor on a the 7D only few times so far, the image is shrunk, but there is no delay like on the 5D. i haven't looked into it yet, but i assumed there would be a firmware update like the one for the 5D to make the output to monitor fill the screen? is there not? there should be one soon i hope.

YES the composite input SUCKS. HDMI is the only way it works.

I remember people on Cinema5d talking something about it not being true HD, but i just stopped listening because it didn't make sense to me. the Lilliput screen i was using gave a very detailed and unmistakening high definition picture.
What you're saying doesn't make sense to me. As I've said, I've spent a lot of time looking for small, high-resolution monitors, especially back in the days in which I was interested in building a DIY projector. No HD-resolution screens exist at 7". Such a screen would be expensive to design and manufacture. Lilliput couldn't possibly have the only one in the world; it just wouldn't make economic sense.

The physical resolution of the LCD is 800x480. Even the manufacturer says so. 800x480 is high resolution for a 7" screen. Maybe you're used to 320x240 or 480x320 screens for SD, and perhaps you only used composite-in. There are several factors that would make HDMI input into the Lilliput look great. But you shouldn't deny reality.

The iPhone screen is high resolution at 480x320. There are several mobile phones with 800x480 and 854x480 screens. Try one and go see how it compares with the Lilliput. Netbooks have screens between 8.9" and 11.6" with resolutions between 1024x600 and 1366x768. Go to Best Buy and see for yourself whether the Lilliput displays a more finely-detailed image than those screens. Or here's another test: Connect the monitor to a computer, then open a full-screen image file with alternating B&W lines at HD resolution and see what happens.

i can vouch for the screen being a great option, whether on a budget or not, why pay for unnecessarily expensive mini monitors? get a cheap one that works for your purpose, pulling focus, framing, and watching the days footage at the end of the day while out in the field.
Yes, it is a great option. But the OP wanted to know what the best monitor under $1000 was. The Lilliput is not HD. If resolution is a factor, then the Lilliput would not be the best for under $1000. It's probably the best 7" monitor, and we can leave it at that.

On the topic, there are many other monitor threads, but comparing the following, which one is the best bang for the buck for : in order of importance :

1) Accurate focus and framing
2) calibration
3) color and contrast
4) sunhood available

Don't want to go with the DP because it's too large. Then it's a question of once you've chosen the monitor, what is the most popular and easiest battery pack to use? Canon, Sony, Panasonic... ?

anyone?

I forgot about the Ikan V5600. It looks like the best choice for the OP, since it's the smallest but also the highest resolution (1024x600) outside of the SmallHD DP1. The Manhattan HD071A is now the highest-resolution 7" LCD that I've ever encountered. You have the Tote Vision 703HD listed twice.

I am really digging the V5600 for the size and price, just not sure about it's batteries, if they are easy to replace and the sunhood for 35 dollars looks next to useless. What else could be used?

This i am positive has been answered but for the life of me I can't remember the results. Can we go mini HDMI out in live view on the 7D? and what is the res is it full 1080p if thet is what we are shooting in?

Thanks, the ikan 5600 does seem to be the right choice/compromise between resolution and handheldability ;)

But the DP1 seems also to be a very attractive proposition...

How much better will the DP1 be resolution wise - Enough to justify its purchase (concerning focus pulling) ?

I think it would be plenty of resolution. I'm just wondering if you plug in using either Composite or HDMI, is there any lag?

FYI: I bought the Liliiput HDMI (from coollcd.com) for my 7D rig and within 1 minute of hooking it up the external battery EXPLODED!! white and green gas started spewing out of it like some sort of booby trap on the old Batman show. WTF?!?

When I bought my Lilliput, I didn't even see a battery on the coollcd.com site. Must be a new product for them...back to the old drawing board, huh? I bought a 9800mAh battery from Hong Kong that powers the Lilliput all day...no problems at all...about $35 via ebay IIRC.

Has anyone tried to mount one on top of the camera?
Would it be too big/heavy?

I have. I would say it's on the verge of being too big, but as someone else mentioned, if you're on a tripod, I think it would be okay. I have the Small HD mounted on a flash bracket and that works pretty well for my purposes for now.

I really like the Small HD and would recommend it. I really can't imagine trying to do video without it.

Don't forget about the Marshall 7" HDMI.
It's resolution is 800x480, however if you hit the 1:1 mode, it will zoom to the center of a 1920x1080 frame. Plus it has Red Peaking which will turn the image black and white while drawing Red "marching ants" around edges as they become in focus. Plus, you can do blue only, and monocolor for calibrating.

Here's a video I made on it with the 5D.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6O7U6H0H38

I just loaded the latest firmware for my 5D II (1.2.4), and I am still getting low res during record. Am I missing something?

The Lilliput monitor is not actually HD. Despite what some cinema5D members believe, the physical resolution is only 800x480 (or is it 854x480?). The monitor can accept an input signal of up to 1920x1440, but it down-scales to fit the physical resolution. I've looked, and trust me, there are ZERO affordable HD-resolution monitors that are 7".

If this is the case , then The IKAN HD8000HDMI Would Also No be an HD monitor since it also Has the Exact same resolution and specs as the lilliput, I just received my 8in lilliput and the resolution is awsome
