I'm going to Beijing and film some athletes. I'm taking my HVX200 but for where I can't take my HVX200 due to size in restricted areas I want to take a HD camcorder. I film evrything in 72024p on HVX. What camcorder is best to shoot with to match framerate'look' an cutting in Final cut pro. will that be the HV30?

thanks a lot

Problem with the Canon consumer cameras is the scrolling shutter issue when in progressive mode. The camera reads the lines from the sensor from top to bottom instead of grabbing the entire image in an instant. The result is that anything moving fast looks like its made of Jell-O, Pans look terrible for the same reason...

If you are filming athletes I'd say anything with a scrolling shutter is out.

that helps a lot haven't thought about that.
I want to film with avchd but editing sucks bad time with FCP.

anyone tips here?

Maybe you could take a look at the panasonic HDC-SD9? Without having actually touched it, it seems like the HV30, only with CCDs instead of CMOS and the rolling shutter issue.

As far as editing goes - you could just transcode everything to a more workable format like DVCPRO HD before you edit. Nothing says you need to work in the format you capture if it's a hassle - people do the same for HDV all the time and AVCHD is just the new HDV.

Keep in mind that it's still long GOP and that can have it's own issues, but if you absolutely must have a tiny camera, you don't really get much choice.

http://www.vimeo.com/1050815 shot with 2 HVX 200's and a Canon HV30 with a canon wide-angle lens. The shots close to the band were all with the Canon. I think it cut together with the HVX's pretty well. As it seems to always happen though, low light at live events SUCKS! Actually had to use the Canon footage a lot more because the 2nd HVX, the high angle one, firestore was acting screwing and only recorded when it felt like. This song wasn't the best to show the camera's ability so I'll post a better song when it gets cut. It was the first time I shot a multi-cam HD concert. The HVX's were 720p 30p. The Canon was 1080I 30p.

that doesn't look bad, pretty good though.
what format you shot on?
is it possible to shoot 24p on canon (puldown remove) or is it 29.97 (filmlook)

Thanks, with one HVX we went direct into FCP (and I edited on Premiere, which was hell figuring out why I couldn't edit the footage before discovering Raylight) and the other HVX was firestore (which was also hell shutting off ever couple minutes) HV30 shoots tape. With the HV30 you can shoot 24p or 30p as well as 60i. I chose 30p because I didn't like the motion blur 24p gave me for this kind of project. I just dropped the 1080 footage into a 720p timeline and it worked fine.

thanks man,
But another question. Ha the camera real 24p. I have to do a real 24pn with an HVX, want to kow if it was real 24 p on canon or removeable pulldown 29.97

The HV30 shoots true 24p encoded in a 60i stream, but Canon, for whatever reason, didn't include the pulldown flags into the MPEG2 stream. You'd need to use software like Cineform, which can detect the HV20/HV30 cadence without using pulldown flags, to get true, editable 24p.

SD9 shoots 1080/24p without pulldown and with 3 1/6-inch chips and a global shutter.

AVCHD at 17 mbps. It has a mini HDMI connector and will ingest via an Intensity board as well.

Just a thought.

thanks you're right, only it doesn't have the mic in. I need it as well to do some interviews.
In Beijing you're not alowed to shoot professionally at certain places during the olympics, so I need to look like a tourist.

24p AVCHD is transcode to ProRes on a Mac.

I believe Edius and Vegas support native editing, but I'm not on a PC. Nor I am certain how those PC apps ingest 24p.

Edius will edit AVCHD natively, but you're better off letting it transcode to the Canopus HQ editing codec. Version 2.10 of the Canopus AVCHD to Canopus HQ converter (a free download for Canopus Edius users) supports 24p AVCHD.
